|
|
I was wondering if anyone had any recommendations: I've signed up to take over a Writing course in my current university from a Chinese teacher that was doing it badly, and the current textbook is full of annoying Chinglish phrasing. The students are third year English majors and can, for the most part, speak English well. Anything that gives a heavy focus to essay writing would be fantastic. |

If their English is good, try using :
"Academic Writing : a Handbook for International Students" by Stephen Bailey. Third Edition. (Routledge)
" Writing Academic English"(Level 4) by A.Oshima and A.Hogue (Pearson/Longman)
These concentrate on writing a paragraph, then essays, including Cause/Effect essays; Comparison/Contrast essays ;
Argumentative/Discursive essays. |

I found this book in a local Chinese bookstore and have found it helpful in my writing classes:
"English Essay Writing." Foreign Language Teaching and Research Press, 2010. (Advanced Higher English Writing Series)
It focuses on essay structure, different types of essays (narrative, descriptive, expository, persuasive), planning and shaping the essay, writing and revising, writing research papers, language and grammar.
Another teacher found this one in the same bookstore and uses it in her writing classes:
"English Writing: From Sentence to Paragraph to Theme." Foreign Language Teaching and Research Press, 2010.

If you want some ideas on teaching writing, I'll send you a copy of my teaching plan for two terms. Send me a message here with your email and you'll get them. |

My Mandarin isn't very good so I probably translated the author incorrectly. |
