Lesson preparation is traditionally unpaid in Viet Nam, but your better places will allow you to do it at home and come in already prepared for that day's/evening's lessons!! Others will have you come in two hours beforehand and devote that (unpaid) time to prepare your lessons!!

BUT -

".....other academic work." Wink

Naw-uh.......I wouldn't take this for two grand USD GROSS.....maybe not even two grand USD NET!

Sounds like a real time-eater to me......

I worked at a a place affiliated with or licensed by CIE with similar conditions to those offered you.

I started with 11 teaching hours a week at a nearby VN school. They provided transportation to and from the office. Office hours were required to lesson plan but I chose the hours. I came and went as I pleased. There were occasional PD hours. I was offered more pay but I had experience teaching in VN and elsewhere. There were no undefined duties at the office.

Does this help?

The statement about "remaining day" is not what you said in your earlier posts, where you gave a specific number of hours, even though you gave a couple of scenarios. I think this is too sloppy of a statement, I would want them to say how many hours this really means, max, average, whatever. Your rate is per month, so it would seem that the number of hours per week or month should be clearly stated.

The other thing is being paid in VND, fine, but what is the conversion rate, and will it adjust as time goes on? Inflation is forecast at 20% or some ungodly number this year. If you are not getting a decent conversion and if your rate is set in stone for the whole contract, it would be a bad sign.

I still think the main issue is what the experiences other teachers have had is. The great thing about this site (and our cooperation) is we can learn what is happening to others and share these things. This is one of the best tools we have against these unprofessional operators. Somebody must know something about this school. Inquiring minds want to know!!!

That certainly is very useful info, thanks.

The position I have been offered is to teach Math, Science and English. In terms of Math and Science I have about 6 years experience teaching it at both high school and university level. I have been teaching English in Vietnam for around 18 month.

This is certainly something that should be specified in the contract of course. I am assuming at the moment that, like the other schools I have worked for, they look at the rate given by Vietcombank.

At $2000 gross I will leave the offer. I have two other offers at the moment, one in Hangzhou and one in Hanoi that are offering more pay for less hours basically.

If someone does have any info on EMG Education that would be great of course![/quote]
