I haven't heard anything back from NET. I had my interview in March in San Francisco and passed that round. I heard back from the EDB for more paperwork and am still waiting. I wish they would tell me something.

if you got through the interview in March and are still waiting, why don't you phone or email edb and ask if your cv has been circulated? find out if your paperwork is ok. you need to be pro-active.

I spoke to the Teach Away Company today in Toronto, they told me they haven't heard anything. I also contacted the edb a week ago and they told me they are still doing the qualification assessment. Are you on the NET program?

reality check: it is now the start of a 3 day weekend. Schools return on Monday, 4 July. They need NETs for late August, and the wait for work visas is approximately 3 weeks (maybe more). Contracts need to be signed soon.

If you don't hear from schools in the next 2 or 3 weeks, then you're not getting a gig for the 2011-2012 academic year.

clear?

I was told by Teach Away that nobody has been offered a job yet. Other than the one individual on this job forum who said he has. Why does the edb take so long?????????????????????????

I do sympathize with the people waiting to hear from EDB regarding a NET contract. Yes they do take a long time. Yes they are very slow.
But often this isn't the fault of the EDB - it's very often the fault of the schools. The cv's circulate, but the schools have been busy up until last week. Some of them are only now, or last week, starting to look at applications. The schools don't empathize with NETS coming from overseas. they don't seem to understand that teachers coming to HK need TIME to organize their lives back in their own countries. Many of the jobs are offered quite late.

Don't be too worried about the fact that it takes time to organize the work visa. When I originally came here as a NET back in 2001, I didn't have time to organize the work visa. I came out on a tourist visa and had to change over. I'm not suggesting this is a good start; in fact it should be avoided if possible. You are better to get your work visa organized before you get here, but for some people, this might not be feasible with the time restraints. If you are offered a contract later, this week, next week, end of July etc. don't worry because you can change over to a work visa once you get here. It is more of a hassle and it can be awkward as you might run into problems regarding payment etc. It also depends on the school and how flexible they are.

You should be aware also that the EDB has tried to get all the contracts starting mid August. In the past there were some schools which started contracts 1st September. The EDB is doing their best to bring them all into line. This doesn't mean however that you have missed out if you hit August and there is no contract. You could still get a late appointment and start a little later than some. This does happen. Also some NETS will get contracts starting at Chinese New Year, although the bulk of jobs will be August.

Anyway, to those out there still waiting - don't give up yet. There are schools still trying to get NETS. Good luck.
