I did a little research on this.
From what I have read in both Chinese and foreign media, the Three Gorges will always be there. At its expected peak the water rises something like 20% up the sides, so most of that aspect of it will not change even when the entire dam(n) project is completed.
What are about to be lost are the banks of the river...the old towns, ancient trees, landmarks, etc. Also read some indications that when the project is finished, the river will be a lot more...orderly. More like a big canal than the wild thing it has been historically.
The first dam is supposed to come online in June.
