I get mixed messages on whether or not to email a scan of one's passport info page to a potential employer/recruiter.
A fair number of job postings include a request for a scanned passport information page with the initial application.
Some experienced TEFLers advise that job seekers should send this information; others seem to advise that it's a red flag and should be avoided.
Maybe it's a timing issue? That is, avoid sending the scan with the initial application, but be ready to do so if you're on the short list? Other factors?
Thoughts?

It largely depends on what your country of passport is and where you want to teach.
As an example, an American cannot (with few exceptions) teach in western Europe so you would have to have a European passport or the recruiter is wasting his time.
In Asia, in many countries like Korea, Taiwan, etc the immigration requirement is that the applicant MUST be (hold a passport from) one of the major anglophone countries. If you don't you can't get a visa.
By asking for your passport scan they can move forward with your application.
Additionally, it reduces the number of "tire kickers" the recruiters have to deal with (no passport means you can't travel and work abroad).
Anyone who is telling you that you shouldn't send the passport scan or that it is a red-flag has probably also never worked abroad.

| I think the OP meant whether or not you should blacken out info on the scan. |

But I hadn't thought about the blacking out of my # til I saw another post yesterday, suggesting that very thing.
I intend to do that next go-round. |

| I wouldn't send a passport scan with the initial application, but after an interview it's standard for a number of countries. |

| Do your own research. Make sure that the "employer" is who he claims to be. If you receive messages from a different email address than those listed on their official website, it is a reason to raise some questions and ask carefully with personal info. |

Your question is a good one! I wonder whether the fact that I have not sent my scanned passprt is the reason schools haven't gotten back to me. But I like the idea of blackening out the passprt number. Good idea.

If it is a potential employer, black out your passport number; they do not need it to validate whether or not you are a real person. Your number can be abused by people in oh so many ways.
If they like you and want to hire you, then yea, they need the number. |
