Yes, but you have a degree, even though unrelated. The catch is that the Ministry will not approve someone without a first degree. (though I have read that a few managed to get past this rule somehow - probably an employer with a friend in the approvals office...  )

Your chances of making a living in Egypt are slim to none.
The Revolution was/is (really, it's not over) a direct result of rampant unemployment. There are literally thousands of qualified, degree-holding, fluent English-speaking Egyptians who are quite capable of teaching English and teaching in English. These are the people who are at the front of the line for jobs and this has been mandated by the government. This is the same government that is routinely spot-checking places where foreigners work (resorts, hotels, schools), and issuing fines to both the employer (along with a stern warning not to do it again) and the employee.
It is possible to live there on a renewable tourist visa (for as long as that option lasts because, at the moment, it's unpredictable) and teach privates, however you will not earn enough to support yourself and your son at the level you have been. And, again, there are risks working without a valid work permit.
Without a degree, even with a TEFL certification, you will never obtain a work permit. |

I hadn't heard about this rule, but then, I've never run into another teacher who didn't have a BA - except on this board. Good to know.
Everything is so up in the air now in Egypt, it is really hard to give any advice. I just got an email this morning from my old neighbor in Cairo and he said that two of his friends who have been living and working for years there on tourist visas were only given one month renewals at the Mogamma. If they stop that and make people do visa runs every month, that will be the end for many people.
That said, I would still recommend doing the CELTA at the Cairo British Council. Just don't expect to be staying when you are finished. I would do it there rather than the cert Alex because the CELTA is more widely known and accepted.

You'll probably be fine. I came here with almost no experience and a BA in anthropology. No certificate, no full-time professional work previously. I've done really well for myself, while meanwhile some of my 50 and 60 year old MA/PhD colleagues fled because they couldn't handle how things work here. Based entirely on this year's experience, ESL/EFL teaching ability doesn't seem to have much relationship to how much education you have.
But like people said above, I'm pretty sure it's impossible to work in Saudi without some Bachelor's degree. Unless you're an Aramco brat, in which case you've had a job lined up for you since birth. |

| Scary, i wanted to use this site to find help, as well everyone else. For a lot of people, advice from others on here can dramaticly change their lives, thats a big deal. So I welcome any comments from you and others, Im also pleased and happy to help you with any information I may have to help you with your life ambition. |

| Its too funny not to mention. Last night I had a dream that I was with a girl I havent seen and hardly remember in years, after that I had travelled to Saudi, but when I got there I was in Egypt. When I was there there were countless theme parks, military planes and choppers flying around all over and nearly hitting us, and the highways were green! |

| I wish, id probably take that as a sign to go now. But after everything ive learned so far...And thinking about it, in Colombia, I have insurance, extendable 3 year visa, friends, family, places to stay etc. I have none of that in Egypt, which dosent bother me, but im thinking it might be too much of a risk to go "right now". Im thinking I will be better off to wait on Egypt, (even though im dying to go), maybe until I finish my BA...... |
