I have heard from several that those IELTS examiners who went to China are making a fortune. Such figures as GBP 4000 a month have been mentioned.

How true is it? What is one realistically to expect if one is an IELTS examiner and goes to China? And what is the best way to make decent money there as one?

Any anecdotes would be appreciated.

IELTS examiners aren't big on talking about their jobs, and having others come on board as it means less work to go round (and less money).

It's possible to make RMB40k/month but you'll burn out methinks (4-5 days of IELTS/week).

Keep asking and someone might answer more fully.

I know an IELTS examiner in Chengdu. He makes the same salary as a standard college level Oral English teacher with 5 years service....About 6,500 RMB a month plus benefits and bonuses . He works three days a week, about six hours a day.

MMV in other areas.

40K RMB/month is not impossible, a more realistic average figure would be 20K RMB/month if you took everything that was offered. That's for northern China.

I heard an IELTS guy can make 2-3k in one day. The guy I know only does it one day a week. Still, that's quite a lot of cash for one day of work, by any standard.

Really? 300 quai per hour at weekends.

The thing is that the examiner has to be tied up to a local employer (with a work permit) who may and often does impose his/her will. If you don't pass some of the employer's students, your Rec or Release latter or the work permit may come tougher the next year.

That's probably because they have signed some tough confidenciality agreements, which many FTs are signing so much more these days too. Fewer and fewer FTs really talk about their jobs these days.

No, really.

Examiners make plenty of money and see no need to dilute their own cash by inviting other people to join in and hog the work.

__00 for two days of speaking modules and __00 for half a days marking is about the level

Having said that, it is extremely easy to find out for yourself how to become an examiner, and when training is, so it is a bit of an open secret.
