I'm currently in discussions with a school in Taiwan.

They have 20+ branches around the country and seem to be quite well organised... but I'd like a few educated opinions on some things before I accept the contract and go there...

They don't offer accomodation... how much NT$ per month for a good furnished apartment in Taipei?

They expect 18-30 hrs of teaching time per week.
starting at $580 NT per hour. Is this enough to live on?

As you'll see in many other threads covering these types of topics - the amount you need to live on depends entirely on how you choose to live.

At the rate you quoted 18 hours a week would pay you about $42K before tax and 30 hours would pay you about $70K, again before tax.

I have no idea what an apartment costs in Taipei but it would seem to me that both of these are liveable wages, although given the amount of nightlife and entertainment options available, perhaps the $42K might be cutting it fine once you take out taxes, rent, utilities, scooter purchase, food etc...

Yeah I think it should be ok (on a 42K min) but I'll need to take some backup $$$ with me to help cover the initial setup costs... such as 1 month rent in advance, scooter hire.

I just hope accommodation isn't too expensive.. anyone know any reliable websites for this?

Generally a landlord will require a 2 month deposit plus your first month's rent. I'm not sure that you'll be able to rent a scooter without an ARC but I could be wrong, still, renting is just throwing your money away. A better bet might be to 'borrow' someone's ARC and buy a scooter in their name then transfer the paperwork when your ARC comes in.
