As for housing from UNizwa- go after what you want, while being polite and respectful, and, over a bit of time, you can get it. |

I don't remember how much it was, but the housing allowance is fixed in terms of the amount. |

I've never heard of EFL teachers at university level being able to negotiate the housing allowance. At best, switch to allowance from provided housing...
Unless you know the place that you are going, I'd always take provided housing the first year and negotiate a move for the next year.

At Nizwa, I was in a hotel for six weeks ( a very small room in a quite inelegant, to put it kindly, hotel). Then they were going to put us in a fire-trap of a new apartment building (which all of the faculty abandoned post-haste). I got out of the hotel after 6 weeks because I found a place and took the allowance. Others were stuck in the hotel much longer, and got the bad apartments. If they have something good on offer, and they often do, take it (after consulting others who live in the building), if not, take the initiative and find your own place. That is, unless the policy has changed- always a possibility. |

| I have been happily living in a nice apartment in Nizwa and finally decided I would rather have a villa. I went to see "Mr. M" and we had several discussions about this. The deal is that he has a lot of apts he has to fill first before he can move anyone into a villa. This was decided by a "board" (so he is off the hook) and until all the univ apts are occupied, we will all have to wait. There is no use in going out on your own to find a suitable house (of any price) because if you do, he will not allow you to have ANY furnishings whatsoever. No stove, fridge, washer, couch, bed, ACs, tables,etc. Nor will the Univ be involved in ANY business to do with your new villa so repairs and landlord disputes will be on you. A few intrepid souls have gone this way but I won't. I'll just sit tight until the villa meant for me opens up. |

In defense of the employers on something like this. If they have an inventory of furnished flats that they are paying rent on, why would they allow someone to find another place... that apparently they are now expected to furnish completely at their expense... and then have yet another flat sitting empty while they are paying the rent.
Common sense people!! Simple economics... Give people a free furnished flat to live in and then they complain when you they decide they want something bigger or better or whatever - even though they admit that they have been "happily living in a nice apartment."

| Hi VS. No "complaining" from me about my "nice apartment". "Mr M" and I just discussed an upgrade. And I may get one, inshaallah:-) It is entirely economics and I am happy to wait. |

That have been grumblings over the years about kickbacks and side deals involved in the housing situation there. There is a scandal below the surface, I think. I don't believe they are paying rent on the empty flats- they just have access to them. Housing has been short in the past in Nizwa, but I think that has changed, and even then some of the shortage is artificial. It is a chummy little group with too much power. |

Dear Isabel.
You, as are we all, entitled to your opinion. But you have been gone from Nizwa for a year now and things have a habit of changing. They are not as you left them.
With all due respect, it would be of much more benefit to this thread (and those who need actual knowledge) not to throw too much use-by information into the reality. |
