Does anyone have experience with the SIT TESOL certificate? It has always seemed like a good course to me, but I have steered away from it because of the name recognition of the CELTA. However, yesterday I met an SIT trainer who does a lot of work for British Council, and she says they consider the SIT certificate an equivalent.

CELTA, Trinity TESOL, SIT TESOL = different brand names (different colleges/universities) for the same thing and they are equivalent.

Globally, in places that know the difference or care about TESOL certs., they hold the same weight.

Thanks for that answer! Curious that the SIT certificate seems to come up so rarely in discussions. Do you think it's because the program is so small?

That and because it is American and 54 countries in the world are tied to the UK (commonwealth of nations) .

Whatever do you mean ttompatz? Surely not that CELTA and Trinity have squeezed SIT out of the global market?

No, just that they have SIT beat in the marketing / name recognition department.

The University of Cambridge is pretty well known globally (considering the fact that it is some 800 years old).

Trinity College in London is pretty well known (outside of the USA) and has been around for about 135 years and doing English assessments since the 1930s.

How many (in or out of the USA) know of the "School for International Training" (originally a Peace Corps training facility).

I agree with this last comment. You can see this for yourself by having a look at job advertisements on this site and elsewhere: where a qualification is stipulated, it is usually the CELTA and/or Trinity certificate. Some will only ask for these.
