The political violence during the runup to the July 3 election is threatening to escalate, given police's new designation of red zones on top of a similar list, and an incident in which a Democrat Party candidate was harassed during his rally in Phitsanulok last Friday.
In addition to "hot spots" in 15 provinces including Bangkok earlier designated by police to heighten security to curb against likely political violence, a new category "red zone" is assigned to Chiang Rai, Nakhon Sawan and Narathiwat, which is not on the hot spot list, to mark the highest potential of violence while all candidates are under police protection.

Following an incident in which Democrat candidate Warong Dejkijwikrom was shoved hard in the chest by three men during his vists on Saturday in Phitsanulok, caretake prime minister and Democrat Party leader Abhisit Vejjajiva has called off a number of planned visits in Chiang Mai, according to party candidate Norraphol Tantimontree.
The new rallies have been scheduled in Mae Rim district after party officials reported a large number of red flags a clear sign of strong support for Pheu Thai Party by redshirt antiDemocrat locals in Muang district, along with widespead vandalism of Democrat election banners and cardboards.
Norraphol said party officials had lodged petitions with the provincial Election Commission office over many incidents allegedly involving rival parties against Democrat candidates and staff during the campaigns in Chiang Mai, popularly hailed among and dubbed by media as the reds' capital.
Abhisit had vowed to continue his tour in the North despite the incident with Warong, saying that he would make visits to planned locations across the country including many in the North awaiting only for dates and time to be confirmed.
The number of candidates seeking police protection is now 288 from 10 parties, mostly those campaigning in the North and the Northeast.

My experience in Thailand during the previous violence was that one should avoid areas of political activity (e.g. demonstrations), especially at night.
Travel at night should probably be done in a licensed conveyance, such as a taxi or tuk-tuk, the driver of which has a vested (economic) interest in getting you wherever safely and with all of your possessions.
It is a good idea to stick to areas where you are known (and although we farangs all look alike, people have an uncanny memory for faces) and don't wear red or yellow!
Answer all political questions by referring to the King, along the lines that however he sees fit to allow the country to be run must be the best way, as you are only a guest... When pressed to take some side, I mention that it's a shame people can't work out their differences peacefully following the example set by His Highness. It works- it's gotten me out of trouble with Thais on the street, in fancy hotels and with government agents.
In the event things get really nasty, it doesn't hurt to have at least a week's supply of necessities stashed in your place, so you don't have to go out for toilet paper, or bottled water or food if they degenerate into mindless violence.
Reading the news reports, it sounds like a great time to visit! |

Brother of Lop Buri candidate gunned down in Bangkok

A brother of a Bhum Jai Thai Party candidate for Lop Buri was gunned down in a broad day light in Chanasongkram district on Thursday. Police believed the attack was politically motivated.
Subhan Jirapanwanich, 53, a chairman of Tambon Administration Organisation in Lop Buri was rushed to nearby Washirapayabaran Hospital, but he was later pronounced dead.
Police were alerted at about 2.45pm about the attack which took place near Lottery Bureau of Thailand on Khao Sarn road.
The victim's wife and secretary were also wounded.
His sister; Malikha, was competing for a parliamentary seat in Lop Buri under the banner of Bhum Jai Thai Party.
Some reports stated that Subhan had told some reporters that he was followed and could possibly be a target of assassination by local politicians. |

Well, at least I won't be woken up any 6:30am by ridiculously-loud loudspeakers on vans crawling up and down the main road near where I live/teach.
Aren't there laws against that sort of thing?! If not, there b****y well should be.
