|
|
In attempt to get all my documents squared away well before applying for a job, I have a question about the request for criminal background checks. There are several types - city, state and country-wide - and I'm not sure which one is expected here, as the language is pretty vague. I tried to search the forums but the search function isn't working on my computer, so if this has already been outlined, please point me to it.
I am hoping to get a position in Thailand, if that helps narrow down the type, but I'd also like to cover my bases if I go somewhere else.
Thanks! |

To be sure, most of the time, a CBC is not needed for jobs or a work visa in Thailand.
That said however, IF you are applying for a Thai work visa from within the US then you will need a state level CBC.
If your thinking is that you may go elsewhere, then an FBI check is the way to go (needed for work visas/jobs in Vietnam, Korea, and Taiwan).
Some countries need to have the check legalized (get an apostille) on them.
They typically have a shelf life of about 6 months from date of issue.

IF you get an FBI check, get it done ahead of time. You'll need to have it apostillised as well. I got two last year at two different times during the year and they both took 4 months, from the time I mailed it to the time I got it back from the apostillisation. |

Thanks to both of you for the info! Very helpful.
I about fell off my chair when the first site I checked for apostille said they charge $200USD! Is that how much you paid, NG? Holy moly. In that case I won't get a CBC until I'm asked for one. |

Just get your FBI CBC with stamp and mail it off to the secretary of state for the apostille. Cost you less than $20.
Don't bother with a "service" unless you are incapable of going down to the post office yourself to mail it off.

No way! I got fingerprinted here in Asia for free. Then sent it to the FBI with instructions on the top in red pen and highlighted that said I was going to use it abroad so that I needed in signed by the FBI and notarised or whatever. I used the wording on their website.
I had them send that to my mom after it gets done.
Then she gets it and sends it to the Dept of State in WDC.
Then they send it to her and she sends it to me. Last year, 4 months total. I just got fingerprinted again and sent it off again last week.
Total costs are pretty cheap, I think I paid $4 for it to be mailed to the US. Then it gets to my mom and it's free and the Dept of State in WDC is less than $10, I think it's $8.
Last time my mom sent it in a small envelope and the grommet got ripped off, making it no longer good, but immigration still accepted it. This time, she should spend more than $1 to have it sent to me
I'd say total costs are about $20. That is, if you have time, if not, you'll have to pay for the service. It's good for 6 months, but that's from the time the FBI does it. I sent it last July, but the FBI didn't acutlaly do the check until Sept and I got the paper in Oct or Nov. |
