Don't fall for the bait, MEB! Just as soon as s/he wrote,

the thread got locked. S/he, like RUBALKHALI, obviously, doesn't have a problem on pressing the little, red exclamation mark.

Where do you get your info? I would have thought with the current global financial climate, with the multitudes of highly qualified professionals scrambling for any job they can get, HCT could afford to be choosy

True that times are difficult in education around the world right now. But what I have seen here is that many highly qualified teachers who had heard of HCT's past reputation as a good employer are tending to turn down offers - if at certain branches (cough cough ADW cough cough). I have received many PMs from people asking what they should believe. I don't want to go into too many details. All I can tell them is that most of the stories here are true, but if it is the best financial offer they have, and they go in with their eyes open, a contract is probably do-able. But it is no longer a place where teachers can count on a long term position, nor is it a place that I can recommend with a clear conscience. (some branches muddle along, but applicants don't get to choose)

Oops I almost forgot Im supposed to be the HCT apologist!

Dont believe a word I write remember, Im a thread locker

Ive asked this before and Im still waiting for an answer, what are the viable alternatives to HCT, that have similar or better benefits/pay?

Ive always maintained that those who are able to put up with the PD BS, form filling and meetings, sleepy students and eccentric colleagues can do ok at HCT.

Its strange but no one has PMed me Wink so the HCT detractors neednt worry, their message is getting through.

People PM me because I've been here so long and they feel that I don't have a horse in the race so will give a more balanced opinion. Cool

We've answered the competition question many times. Perhaps you missed it. Because of the relative sizes, HCT doesn't exactly have tons of competition, but there is the rest of the world - one can find similar pay in Japan, China and Hong Kong if you've got the right CV. I would say their competition in the UAE is ZU and AUS, which both hire few teachers each year... UAEU which hires more but also seems risky these days as they decide what they are doing. But, they do have equal or better packages. In Qatar, there is QU which has a similar pay and benefits unless you have 10+ years of experience as their pay scale is flat. I hear that in Kuwait, KU's pay has increased, but they seem to not be doing many foreign contracts these days and AUK is pretty good.

There are much better places to work in the UAE and in neighboring countries (even, and I choke on this, in KSA--ARAMCO). The problem is you can't get in them because people won't leave them.

Realistically, if there aren't any better alternatives, then it doesn't bode well for those of us in the TEFL profession who are seeking employment.

PD BS, form filling and meetings, sleepy students and eccentric colleagues...the tip of the iceberg.

If sharing the truth/facts about my experience at HCT labels me a detractor, then it reflects poorly on HCT, not on me.

Aramco!??????

Why not add British Aerospace only if you're a Brit though!

I would think that you could earn as much at HCT as in Aramco and have to deal with just as much admin BS and even more disinterested students.

Give me the UAE over KSA any day.

So we'll just say that HCT is probably maybe not your worse choice if you're set on going to the UAE, it could also be your only choice, so you're better off looking elsewhere.

Fair enough! Agree to disagree, but in an agreeable manner. You have met the bar! Well done! Very Happy

That being said, I still have a trace of difficulty with CERT.

Not true at all.
There are lots of Australian, Irish, etc among the BAe staff.
They might have had some restrictions years ago but that hasn't been the case for at least 10 years.
If you've got the qualifications (MA for Riyadh, I think) and recognized TEFL qualification for other places, some experience and can do the job reasonably well, you should be able to get into BAe.
The only issue might be age as I think it's now 55 (Royal Saudi Air Force rules)

That's not quite as true as well. I am well-qualified and have decades of experience, but when it came to the rubber meeting the road, even though I have an M.Ed. in TESOL, I was told by the woman BAE Systems recruiter, "If you do not have a PGCE we cannot even consider you.

I'm sorry, but over in the Americas, we call them "Master's", not Post Graduate Certificate(s) of Education. We call them degrees!

Pardon my side of the pond!

So, are you saying you can earn $9000 per month at HCT? To borrow a statement from Kevin McCallister, "I don't think so."

I, too, would take the UAE over KSA any day. (OMG, we agree on something! Very Happy )

I must also agree with MEB here. I made it clear on these boards that I recently lost out on a job with ARAMCO that would've paid me 40% more than my HCT salary, would've had a MUCH better cadre of students than can be found anywhere else in the ME, had better living possibilities, better education for the little one and offered 1/2 mil in company savings after 7 years of employment.

HCT is a second-class entity which is quickly being quickly flushed down the loo by the VC and his minions.

They have failed, even if "technology" is within their name, to recognize that "Education (is, indeed!) Without Borders" and their secret is out ALL over the web.

Ironic, don't you, think?

I admit my knowledge of all things KSA is not all it should be. I stand corrected.

Although, I would still think that the UAE is a better option for families with young children and wives who want to venture out of the house now and again or/and not spend their days drinking coffee in Starbucks.

As for those grey of beard with grown up kids or no kids KSA would at least present a better option in terms of saving money.

I didn't even bother applying to BAe because of what I thought was their 'Brit' only policy.
