Considering the atmosphere of the year that Isabel was there, she got to hear way too much gossip and conspiracy theory from certain people. Laughing That said, it is the Gulf and it is all about wasta and who you know. I have heard such allegations about other employers too, but never any actual proof, of course.

But, I know that my private university employer in Muscat paid the rent on the whole flat inventory because when I requested a move from HR, they told me not until the lease expired. But then I went upstairs to the Dean and explained the problem to him and he picked up the phone and called HR and told them that I would be moving as soon as I found a flat. And the management was all Omani.

Dear Isabel.
You, as are we all, entitled to your opinion. But you have been gone from Nizwa for a year now and things have a habit of changing. They are not as you left them.
With all due respect, it would be of much more benefit to this thread (and those who need actual knowledge) not to throw too much use-by information into the reality.

Yes, well, you can see by most of my posts that I am a cheerleader for the university. However, I have heard that some of the changes are not great, and that is unfortunate.

I have my fingers crossed for the place.

Isabel,

One of the greatest changes has been the loss of the "old timers", that is the teachers who were the problem and who were of course, your former colleagues. This will be a change for the better.

Hellionzap is quite correct to say that things have moved since your very short sojourn at Unizwa, they have done so for the better and will continue to improve.

We were lucky enough to be given a furnished house on arrival here and are thankful to Mr M for doing that. What a lot of FI teachers seem not to understand is the "Mr M" and is assistant "K" are not there exclusively for them. There are other Faculties who also have teachers and their accommodation has to be maintained as well.

It seems that new arrivals always want to get rid of the "Old timers' and establish their own Domain. At some point you will be the 'Old timer' and people will want to get rid of you. How will you feel then?

I have worked in many places and countries, and have never had anything but general gratitude for the old timers that have taught me the ropes. But the old timers being mentioned at Nizwa were, let us say, a special group. Fortunately, not as special as they thought they were, though.

One of the ways new instructors get better housing is to make sure the program gets rid of the old instructors who have good housing. Make up stores, attack their integrity and a whole host of other made up problems are good ways to get people fired/non-renewed so you can get their house. This must be the case. It has to be since nothing has been offered as to the bad teaching practices of the old timers. By listening to the nay sayers you'd think they did something like put a grammar exercise on a listening test.

That is a novel conspiracy theory- get rid of the old timers to get their housing. Did they have good housing? That explains everything.

Beast, after you current lamentations are you surely not one of those teachers who were not renewed? Well, their accomodation was really not ermm, shall we say "A+", so why would teachers, most of whom never having been to Nizwa before, want so badly to move in?
No I kind of think you are dribbling out the "Old timers" rhetoric of "unfair dismissal", trying to justify yourselves as to what you regard as an unfair "sacking". As you are aware, Unizwa does not have to give a reason for non-renewals, so move on like most of you less verbose colleagues.

Those of you who hate "Old timers" are what is known as Wrecking Balls. You come into a program and feel that your only satisfaction is if you trash people who have been there a while and at the same time make yourself look important. Sometimes directors are clueless enough to say to themselves, "Well, they say everything is bad so they must be right. I should do what they say." You take your delight at screwing up other people's lives. Why does it make you so angry that people like working in Oman and actually like teaching the students at the University? NO, they are having a good time so you feel it is your job to screw around with their life.

You probably trashed out the last place you worked, are doing it to the University and when you have done all the damage you can do here you will move on to trash out the next place you work.

You have offered up absolutely no evidence about lack of teaching skills. You have only indicated that you don't like them so they should go.

There must be a 12 step group, phobia or mania to explain people who get their pleasures out of causing problems in other peoples lives in TEFL programs. You really should be ashamed of yourselves.

Goodness... yes it certainly is...

Talk about alternate realities of what happened.
