It has to be paid back in one year, a big chunk out of your monthly salary.

It's a 4 year loan, decreasing by 25% per year. Paid by cheque once the bureaucratic paperwork is completed. I assume that is what you need to know.
I assume you are talking about the Min of Higher Ed??? |

Is it amortized over the four years in terms of you working it off (like in the UAE) or do they actually make deductions from your salary during that period of time?

Well things must have changed in the MoHE, since I was working for them for 5 years in Salalah. I had my loan in 2006, would haver been nice to have it deducted over 4 years. I don't think you can work it off, too much paperwork for their admin.

It sounds as if it is actually a "loan" that you have to pay 100% back. Not like in the UAE where it is an "allowance" where if you work 4 years (or however many it is now) you don't have to pay any of it back.

Ooooh...that's not good. I wonder if this is SOP in Oman.

According to a recent ministry source you don't have to pay anything back if you work for them for four years. |

That's correct. In fact it decreases by 25% per year. If you resign early, then you owe a pro-rata amount. After 4 years you owe nothing.
If you are terminated they tend to write it off.
Not a bad deal really! |

Well... now we have a couple different versions of what happens.
Perhaps someone with access to it could tell us what "civil council 9/96" says and whether the recruiters are following this rule properly.
VS
(with my employers in Oman, I was provided with furnished flats, so this was never an issue. The change appeared with the recruiter system) |

Anyone with access to Oman civil council 9/96, be kind enough to enlighten us, please, without getting yourself deported, and in detail!
The ministry source, BTW, indicates reliable ministry HR, not a recruiter or recruiters.
Anything else on the role of the HE Ministry would be helpful too - I mean, what to expect during the pre-arrival and arrival, or settling in, phases. |

I would say do not expect anything, just go with the flow. Accept that there will be interminable delays, relax it is the ME norm.

I tend not to use credit but IF I end up in a non furnished house a furniture loan that I don't have to pay back would be nice.
They are welcome to the furniture when I leave LOL gessh then they could offer the next teacher a furnished house. Whatever it is I think getting it in writing may be essential
it's decision time and I wondered tonight if I could decision myself out of making a decision. |

Good luck with your decisions, but inevitably you have to make those calculations and hope for the best.
Oman seems a decent destination in troubled times, though, life is still very simple and the people traditional and polite.
Suppose your current location is no longer Paris - probably that at the time of your ESL cafe registration - 'cause that would have been a real 'ouchy' setting for a decision like this. Muscat vs. Paris?? |
