Hi all,
I've just been offered an 'FA' post with the HCT; sorry for not specifing which campus (NOT Abu Dhabi or Dubai). I've over 5 years post-CELTA experience (mostly in the Middle East), degree etc. What should I be expecting per month, considering that I have to pay for utilities and work-transport?
I'll be grateful for any feedback, because I've got to accept said offer within the few coming days. |
Whatever they have to pay you to get you to sign. They use to pay somewhere in the range of 13k-18k per month, but I've read in this forum that they're topping 20K now.
BTW, if you're going to Fujairah, utilities can run anywhere from 200-2000 dirhams per month depending on the weather and your accommodation.
I hope you stick it to 'em! They always feign complete control, but such is no longer the case.

As tempting it would be to post a Britishism of what FA could mean "F*** All", to the HCT, it means Faculty-Academic.

And what the heck does that mean? A content teacher rather than EFL? Or not in Foundations?

So... Faculty-Academic means that you teach the bottom of the pile in Foundations? Then what do they use to refer to faculty that actually teach something "Academic"?
I just love Middle East university double speak...

I would be grateful to hear more about HCT Fujeirah as the upcoming semester progresses. I have spent time in Fujeirah and like the city. I'm used to bone-headed management. I'm more concerned with student behavior and the curriculum. Are the students good or horrible? What is the curriculum like?
Thanks,

Hi Rick,
You can do a search for that information, but briefly...
Most of the students at Fujairah Women's College are spoiled little brats. They are the worst-behaved students I've ever had to face (and that includes some really bad guys in Saudi Arabia). Worse yet, FWC chooses to coddle them with endless counseling rather then kick their butts out. Some of them would feign illness in class and swoon into another student's arms very dramatically. IT WAS A ZOO.
No better at the men's college...one teacher was overcome by their behavior to the point that he had to leave the job and seek counseling in his home country (i.e., he committed himself for treatment).
The foundations curriculum sucks. They tried a strand-based curriculum last year that bombed big time.

That's a real shame. I was hoping to return to the UAE at some point but I don't want to put up with that crap. I wonder if there are any decent places to teach in the UAE.

Others may disagree with me, but I can tell you, it is all the same. Some can handle the students and mgmt better than others, but everyone has their breaking point sooner or later. Mine is usually sooner. |

You may not be aware that with HCT, you apply to HR and they (and branch management) decide where you are placed. You can state a preference, but they put the teachers where they are needed.
