Hello everyone,
I'm a recent CELTA graduate in search of my first job. A lot of employers ask for a copy of your passport, I was wondering should I send the exact scan, or should I 'black out' some information?

If you are an American (they tend to worry the most) you can black out your passport number (not that it makes any difference).
Otherwise, I wouldn't worry about it.
If they were going to steal your identity there is enough information in your resume to do that (even without the passport information)
AND
any employer abroad will just bin your application if your passport isn't included. They use it to verify that you can get or don't need a work visa/ work permit (come from an appropriate country), and that you are ready to travel (you actually have a passport.

I'm British. I've taken the precaution and blacked out my passport number anyway.
Time will tell if they have anything to say about it.

In terms of a first look (i.e. the places that won't even consider you without receiving a scan of the passport along with your CV etc.) I would block out the number if you are worried.
They may need to the number to actually apply for documents etc. so you might need to give it at a later point. I wouldn't be too concerned over this, but I can't see how blocking a number out can harm your chances in getting considered for a role. In fact, I would think a lot of places might not even notice until they needed to actually use the number for something. They are really after the picture and proof of nationality. |

Really? Any employer? Oh, is that what I've been doing wrong all these years?!?
I think that is a bit of an overstatement. If it is specifically requested as part of the application package, then yes, include it. If not, don't. The school will ultimately need it if they hire you, but NOT all schools ask for passport photocopies upfront; therefore, not all schools will bin applications that don't have them.
Just out of curiosity, where are you applying? I don't recall all that many places requesting my passport. If it makes you uncomfortable, don't do it. Find other schools.

I agree with dean--they really want to see a pic without having to ask for pic! And proof of nationality and AGE.
If you are worried about identity theft, I'd black out day and month of birth (possibly year--but then you've foiled the employers attempt to know exactly how old you are.) as well as the number. |

China mainly, though I am not set on location, a lot depends on the terms and conditions of the individual job. Of the responces I've got I would say 90% have asked for a passport photo.
I WAS going to send my information to one employer, but I did a little bit of internet searching and I found a few warnings, I'm not sure if I can mention names but as it would be my first job, I'd like to be as sure as I can be (within reason) about the employer. |

A request for your passport photo isn't the same as a request for the main page of your passport. Check the application process requirements carefully since they may simply want a scanned copy of your 2x2-inch passport photo. I've had similar requests and that's what I've sent with no problem. The main page of my passport was then required once I'd had an interview and was moved along in the hiring process. |

Sorry, I meant to say they ask for a copy of my passport. I was referring to the 'photo page' of my passport when I said the above.
To digress a bit, is the main recruiting time for China/Asia in January? |

Different countries, different hiring seasons.
Schools in China start the year in September, so the last several months would have been the big hiring time. Some schools might have had teachers back out at the last minute though, so there's still a chance for jobs now. Language schools hire year round.

Bah, I thought I might have missed the boat but a friend said China generally recruits for January, I thought it was a bit odd when looking at job adverts.
Shame my CELTA course only finished last week, I feel I may have to wait a while, especially as I haven't had my full set of jabs yet.
Another quick question, what would be the 'typical' wage for a university position for a CELTA qualified degree holder? If I could get such a position as my first paid teaching job.

I think January would be a good time to look for jobs in Japan, where the school year starts in March/April.

Visit the China forum. Lots of info there and it's a good way to get a feel for the country/jobs/teaching.
Many universities in China will have some vacancies for the second term beginning late February.

Yeah, the China forum has lots of older posts discussing these questions. A university job will generally be around 5,000RMB/month and usually include flight allowance, travel bonus and apartment.
The main hiring time would have started in March and finished in May, but many universities will be looking to fill spaces at the end of August and early September. |
