Does it exist?

I am considering a move to London and am wondering if there is anyone on the ground who can talk about the current situation.

What's the demand like?
What's the pay like?
Are there private schools that hire teachers hourly?

Any help would be appreciated.

No one seems to know.

I keep a keen eye on TEFL.com and it seems there is a business school or 2, I remember because I was surprised to see that one of them offered 25 an hour. More than the usual 8 - 12 an hour which seems to be on offer in London.

I can't remember the name of the school unfortunately but google probably knows.

In answer to your final question, if TEFL.com is anything to go by it seems most schools hire hourly. Thats's only a good thing if the demand is high though....

Most of the teaching jobs advertised on tefl.com are for the lowest paid, usually temporary, summer jobs. If you have good qualifications and experience, you do NOT even consider these as they pay a pittance.

In London there are masses of potential students and businessmen(especially Russians, Japanese and Arabs) who are seeking specific teaching in presentation skills, IELTS preparation, GMAT, GRE, thesis proof-reading/editing etc etc. They are prepared to pay from 30-50 pounds per hour.

However, you cannot just expect to arrive and pick up this kind of work - you have to have the right qualifications (MA minimum) and build up your reputation. Then by word of mouth about your teaching skills, you will be approached. The best "way in" is to be attached to a high-ranking university. Start by advertising on university notice boards and build up from there.

I usually average about 20 hours of private lessons per week, and now in the summer, I'm turning work away-mostly the IELTS rush for university entrance in September.

Good luck!

Starting with university notice boards seems like a good idea. There is a big variation in costs 8-50! In Moscow its about 25-35 for 60mins. I am sure some people get much more. But the demand is high so that sort of money is not difficult.

What's the market like? You say that there are heaps of Russians etc who want lessons.

Also, are there agencies that these students go to for a teacher?

Also, thanks to the people who PM'd me with some schools. No replies from them yet though!

I have noticed there are a lot of english language schools in london.

How do they react to people who are applying whilst not there? I know that for example in Prague and Moscow, they prefer to recruit when you are on location?
