We are planning to show up in KL about Dec. 6, 2011 and search for a job which I assume starts the 1st week in January 2012? January 2nd is a Monday--would this be the 1st day of the semester? Or perhaps the following Monday Jan. 9th? Need to know an approx date if anyone can shed some light Smile Thank you.

In years past I would have said that early December was okay for arrival, but this year a lot of college and university programs are moving their semester start dates up as much as a month earlier.

For example, the program that I teach in usually started mid-January (local university) but the next semester's start date has been moved to 19 December!

I would suggest arriving a little earlier, perhaps mid-November, to give yourself the best job-hunting chances. Of course, it depends upon what type of school you are targeting. The international schools (secondary education) will still follow the traditional August/January start dates. Those schools would start on 2 January 2012.

thanks Kayu great info there.... unfortunately we cant get there til about Dec. 4. Yeah Ill be going for those jan. 2 starts. I know its not much time to land a job, and do you think its safe to say that if I have got no offers by Dec. 23 or so, then it aint too likely an offer will be coming along for a Jan. 2 start?

No, you keep looking until you get a job. Openings come up all of the time. Check out jobstreet malaysia for other openings.

just checked it out--thats an awesome site. Thank you. Even tho Jan2 is the start date, good to know jobs may still come up after that date. I suppose more than likely they'll be cram schools I'll call them, but thats OK with us, we're not picky. Need to start somewhere.

Government schools = essentially free, but mostly crowd control
Former parochial schools, now under the gov't = moderate fees, best academics and extracurriculars of the gov't schools
Private international schools = very expensive, but great academics and extracurriculars (you pay for it)
Home school = depends upon the home as to how good it can be (mine was great)
And then there is a final option that I cannot discuss publically, but you can PM if you want.
