I want to come to Shanghai, and in general the terms seem good, but the contract I've just been sent is in poor English, long and complex...(Are they serious about 'no psychological illnesses? In China? Obviously it dosn't apply to the students...there's also a clause about no second jobs...doing unpaid extra-curricular activities...I mean, occasionally, sure, I just 'judged',ahem, my current school's speech competition... ) I guess I just don't like it...does anyone have any experience or knowledge of these people and how it works out in practise?

Tong Li is a community not far from Shanghai.

Tong ji is a uni in Shanghai.

To which do you refer?

I too posted a question about this company.

I too could not get much information from them. I asked for a reference from a previous or current teacher there, but the teacher will not reply to my email.

Victoria you are a putz!

You obviously know nothing about schools in Shanghai. You obviously know nothing about Tong Li, Tong ji or Tong Hu Consulting Service.

Do you post just because you like to see yourself in print?

Tong Hu is a private business English company where the hours are evening and weekends, too many, unsteady and unreliable. Or, they will farm you out to another school.

I don't mind evenings and weekends, or being farmed out, depending on the travel involved, it's just that there seems to be an element of uncertainty regarding the initial good salary...there's the standard-sounding clause about secondary work, and yet they also seem to be saying that if you don't work for the full month, minimum hours, they only pay for the actual hours worked...have to clarify this!

Most places I've worked at so far have been ok for payments, although there's often a hassle if the pay lady's gone out of town etc...and nobody speaks English in pay offices, but it's usually there within a week...New Concept made me wait two months once, but I have a friend who used her connections...

Any advice about Shanghai jobs or agencies? I mainly want to save.

I will take a lot of flack over this, particularly from those claiming to make hugh salaries in Shanghai.

Big money equals big time in terms of hours taught. Expenses are high.

I find that less salary in the countryside equals less hours, less expensive living and more actual savings.

This is just my personal experience.

Yes I am in Shanghai, again. However, the countryside (hinterland) is calling, again.

Did I read "Consultancy" in a post identifying the contractor?
That's a give-away: they are illegitimate recruiters trying to pass you off to someone, at a hefty commission.
IT's standard to sign a contract saying you don't have the right to moonlight; but it's totally non-standard for a "consultancy" to be your employer!
So, who will be your sponsor?

All the above are great comments, the only strange thing I think is that nobody out there seems to know anyone that has worked for the company or better yet, has worked for them themselves.
Does anyone out there know anything about this company?

Also, Ace. I talked to them about the moving from school to school. They said all the work would be week "days". I asked for clarification and they said no nights, no weekends. Second is they said that the teacher would be working two schools. So I asked if the schools were close to each other and what the commute times would be like. They said one day one school so that the commutes would be minimal. This all seemed o-ke.

The hardest lesson to learn in China is to say, "NO".
