It is my first posting overseas and am unsure which to take. China position sounds nice but the money offered in Taiwan is better. Can anyone give me advice on either what they would do or perhaps what to base my decisions on.

I would recommend you read the articles here:

and here:

to see for yourself which place sounds more appealing to you. You should get in touch with a foreign teacher teaching at the place, before you sign any contracts. Also, determine what your major goal is (travelling? saving money? learning Chinese?) |

I'm actually considering the same options--among others..I am in China now-not too far from Qingdao actually. Of course the salary will be higher in Taiwan but it's a trade off...You will get a LOT more free time in China. And if you dont the job isn't worth it. So you will have time to travel around etc...The climate in Qingdao is nicer unless you are looking for tropical heat...I guess it would come down to the details of each offer...
A lot of people go for more cash - have a bad time and end up going home. Why not try to just enjoy your first job and go for the savings later..Just a thought. |

That's my plan. I've never done this before so I figure China is a good first step. If I hate it, then hopefully my time will go quickly and I can go home happy that I tried and secure in the knowledge I can remove teaching EFL from my list of career options. If I love it and decide to do a career change (at least for a few years), then I'll worry about teaching somewhere that will allow me to pad my savings. |
