I got a job offer for about 30,000 USD a year (11,000 dirhams per month) to teach in a private institute. The institute teaches English but also it teaches test preparations for American SATs, GMAT, GRE, LSAT, etc. 6 hours days a week, only one way ticket paid, one week vacation, 120 hours per month teaching minimum, and I have to pay for my own expenses including housing and transportation.

Is this a good deal?

That's a rhetorical question, right?

No, its not rhetorical! I have no idea what the salaries there are, I know this is comparable to Korea but slightly worse, and I thought Dubai has higher salaries especially cuz I would be teaching math and stuff here. Please answer yes/no and elaborate if possible. Thanks.

It's garbage if you have any qualification whatsoever (and any self respect)

NO!!!

Salary is way too low.
Couldn't decipher, but did you mean 6 days per week? That's nonsense. Should be 5.
One week vacation is insane. When I was in the UAE I got 7 weeks/yr.
120 contact hrs/mo. = 30 per week = outrageous.
Paying for you own housing out of that ridiculous salary--preposterous.

*** must be a joke. Don't let the joke be on you.Shocked

Do you have an MA in TEFL/TESOL or a DELTA or a CELTA or something along those lines?

How many years of experience do you have, and teaching what (conversational English, academic English, etc)?

MEB Cool

Okay, thanks guys, its a relief because I already rejected the position a few days ago and had been having second thoughts. I had a suspicious feeling in my gut about the institute and when I tried to negotiate a salary they wouldnt' budge.

Yeah I have to be there 6 days a week, 120 hours per month so 30 teaching hours a week, also much more than anything in Korea. They are willing to offer me vacation of one week only if I make my one-year contract one week longer. They also deduct I think something like 1000 dirhams every month from my salary, and give it all back to me only after I complete the contract.

I don't have masters degree or CELTA certificate, but I do have over two years of teaching experience in South Korea, both with children and adults. Also, I wouldn't be teaching English. I would be teaching standardized tests preparations like SATs, which is university entrance exam for American kids, and like GRE, which is an admissions exam for graduate schools across the english speaking world. What qualifies me to teach this is my very high score in one of these tests (don't mean to brag), so I thought I deserve at least a bit more than what I got in Korea, where anyone with any uni degree and no criminal record can do what I did. Instead, it was considerably worse than Korea. Talk about the middle east premium...
