Hello,

We have all read a lot of postings saying how the people concerned coming over to Japan on a tourist visa and finally get a job.

But as other guys have reminded me on this forum, there is always the chance that your work visa will be denied.

I wonder how often it occurs since we've seen a bunch of successfully cases only but not the unsuccessful ones.

Probably not very often. If you meet the general requirements for a work visa (not many visa types for teaching, but you still have to be qualified), the odds are in your favor.

So, do you meet the requirements?

Basically if you have the degree and the job offer and no issues like having been previously deported from Japan or another country you will be fine.

The only person I know of who has been refused a work visa had some kind of previous record with Japan Immigration involving doing work that wasn't permitted under her resident status at the time- can't remember exactly what it was. She came back on a tourist permit and got a job offer from the company I worked for but wasn't granted the working visa.

It also depends a lot on the place. If the place doesn't have their act together or has had immigration "issues" before there's the potential for problems.

One of the "issues" that Inflames is talking about is the employer either not cooperating by not giving all the documentation necessary, knowing that the application will be ultimately rejected and the employee will be eventually forced to leave the country minus their all, some or most of their last pay when their tourist status expires.

Most of what I was talking about is the company not following immigration laws and getting trouble because of that (like what I heard happened to Gaba years ago) or people getting visas then quitting soon after. Although Yamanote Senbei's issue is just as valid (actually it's worse as the employee gets screwed out of cash).
