|
|
Hi - I've been looking at some MA programs (TESOL), and was wondering what countries pay the best salaries for teachers w/ a MA immediately after graduating and then with 2-3 years FT experience post-MA. From what I've read, the UAE seems to pay the best, where you can expect around $50k-$60k tax-free if you have a few years of FT experience after the MA. Are those the highest-paid positions (having reasonable expectations) for someone with a MA and experience?
Thanks |

QTS (qualified teacher status) gets you higher salaries than a masters (eg. at international schools), though having a masters will also help. Masters are mainly relevant for uni jobs and yes, Gulf unis probably pay highest. |

Or - with the right qualifications, experience, and employer - Saudi Arabia.

Depends. International school salaries seem to be consistently good (for the good/"real" international schools, at least) around the globe, whereas university salaries are good only in a few places. In the Gulf, they are just about even, I'd say.

You can make $65+/hour in New York City and it can average out to about $85 per contact hour with paid prep. Even if you teach 20 hours per week, that is decent money. These jobs are at the top universities and require a masters. Some do offer PT and adjunct benefits. Of course, you do pay tax here in NYC. Lots of tax.
Nevertheless, they are prestigious, enjoyable jobs that could lead to full-time positions. |

I didn't know there were positions paying this much in the US - can you find positions that pay this well in other cities too (say in California) - or are they mainly limited to New York City? Do they mainly look for a masters and some experience or do they want other quals as well (like publications)?
Thanks |

Working in the Arab world seems a bit tough though. Are you allowed to have a girlfriend, or are you restricted to women you are married to?
Also, I guess UAE is pretty westernised for westerners. What about the other countries then? I heard Saudi is like a prison in some respects. I heard that your employer provides an exit visa. So if you try to leave early then you are screwed. |

Middle East, maybe Japan or Korea. I make within that range, after all deductions, don't get housing, but 5 months of vacation makes up for it. I've heard Saudi pays more than the UAE, better benefits, but I don't know for sure. I know it's generally considered harder to live in Saudi. |
