I bought my Telmex cell phone about 3 years ago at a time when I didn't yet have a CURP and had no trouble getting my phone activated. However, I bought it at a store that specialized in cell phones, and they took care of whatever had to be done for me.

That was before the law went into effect. But they probably had you in the system as a non-Mexican, so when the law went into effect you still didnt have to register. I know MY cell phone company was chingue y chingue until I registered my phones.

I forgot about that law. By the time it was passed, I had a CURP, which I had gotten for some reason or another, and I registered my cell phone number on my cell phone. In fact, the confirmation message is still on my phone and is dated 16/03/2010.

They were chingue and chingue us too, until the date came and went, they made one more push to get people to comply, then dropped it about 3 weeks past the date. Never registered any of our phones and it has been a total non issue since. I saw a news story than only about 15% of the cell phone owners in the country registered their numbers. People 1 The Man 0.

Yeah, I wish I had resisted a little longer, I guess I believe the dire warnings that phones would be turned off. And I know a couple of people who use smaller companies who phones were turned off. But I think TelCel and MoviStar just looked at the revenue they would lose if they suddenly turned off half their customers and said, naw, better to pay the fines. But, I do know that now you cant have the phone activated without providing the info, so it does at least apply to new purchases. I dont think the law was going to do what they thought it was going to do anyway.

We were okay with complying, given the rationale behind it.

Odd, I never had to register mine. I was getting all kinds of text messages about it for awhile but nothing ever came of it. I've had my cel number for years and years though.

Yeah, a lot of people ended up not having to register. Originally, they set a date for registration, and it was so low they extended it. Supposedly, after that date phones would be turned off, but the companies said, Hell, no, we are going to loose tooooooo much business and refused, at least the big ones. They were threatened with fines, but I dont think anything ever came of that either. I didnt have a problem registering either, but I dont think it really resolved anything, but it probably kept 40 or 50 clerks busy for a while.
