Recently I began my second posting in Turkey and have experienced what I can only call "the honeymoon". This is a time of dinners, perhaps an evening on the Bosporus and lots of little endearments. However, sooner or later the honeymoon inevitable comes to an end, and then the real work begins. One is expected to get out of the bloody wagon and push for the greater good of the group (read family here). I would rather forgo these pleasantries and get a few quid more per hour. Less sugared tea and more respect as a professional would go a long way towards making me feel wanted. I have found it is a short period of lavish carrot, followed by a rather harsh stick which leads to disenchantment. One then moves along and another is given his or her brief honeymoon. Is this just me here or is this common place. Comments welcome.

You can have that, respect as a professional, stuff. I'll take more time off or a few extra dollars any day.

But that's just me.

I've jettisoned the whole notion that, I am a professional, worthy of respect, in favor of, To the guy who is paying me, I'm an hourly, foreign employee who may be here one minute and gone the next.

I find it oddly liberating.

I get it, "have diploma, will travel" fastest conjugater in the west and all that. Desperado, you've been out ridin' your fences too long. Get with a nice bunch of folks and stop being such a money grubber. All ESL teachers are created equal old boy, it's just some of us are more equal than others. Do you ever wonder why, from your lonely perch on the edge of things furiously crunching numbers on your calculator, no one likes you? Because we are less mercenary than you and the folks around here get it. I am no apologist for the worst of it, just saying you can catch more flies with honey than vinegar Carpet Bagger.

OT do you know smaug personally? You went too far in criticising him (I assume he's a man from his postings). All he's doing is expressing an opinion-and he has the right to one by the way, as you do- and you've gone for the jugular
Wow-you really want a fight, don't you?

You have no right to decide who's "right" and who's "wrong."
You're either looking for fight or you're a troll. Or both.

Any misunderstanding is probably my fault.

When someone writes, "comments welcome," I tend to take them at their word.

Bad habit of mine. I'll work on it.

I wouldnt worry too much about it Smaug, misunderstanding is a given with posts like OT's. I mean, look at his original post. Is he looking for information? Is it a creative writing exercise? Expressing an opinion? No one knows. It's like the weird, buzzing internal monologue you might hear on the verge of sleep or in the midst of a coke bender.
