Hi there !
I'm coming to Madrid to do a TEFL at Canterbury TEFL. I will be staying in a economical hotel to start with but will be looking for something more permanent.
Where should I be looking in order to minimise my daily travelling ?
Thanks, Graham |

I wouldn't sweat it too much, the metro in madrid is pretty widespread.
I mean, it is like 4 million miles under the surface of the earth and sometimes descending to stations takes longer than the actual journey but it's still reasonably convenient (for spanish public transport).
also, will you be working in this centre after you've finished? if you want to walk to work you're going to have to wait and see where you end up working. |

I can recommend Arguelles, the area just above Plaza de Espana. We recently spent a few nights at a hotel there. It has a nice, leafy, neighbourhood feel, completely removed from the hustle and bustle but is an easy walk into central Madrid. And 2 or 3 metro stations within easy reach. Apparently it has become quite popular though for all these reasons, so prices might be a bit high. Still, worth a look ... |

I'm also interested in this topic. I am doing my Celta in the UK, and then hope to be in Madrid by mid-October.
Should I look for a cheap-ish hostel to start with, and try and find work first, or should I search for a flat-share as a priority? Like the posters seem to be saying, it depends on where I'll be working.
Does anyone have recommendations for cheap but decent guesthouses/hostels in Madrid. Ideally i'd like a private room, but price is important. Anything up to E30-40 is the top of my budget really.
Also, any websites for apartment/jobs that anyone could recommend?
Thanks. |

I'd say you're being a little harsh in your assessment. The Madrid metro and its public transport system in general is amazing. Certainly better than anything else I've experienced and goes light years beyond "reasonably convenient".
For around 50 a month you get an abono covering the whole shebang, buses/metro/cercanias 24 hours a day. What more could you ask for? |
