The Twin Cities, (alot of people often forget that St. Paul is here too), are pretty diverse, more so than Houston, but probably not comparable to a place like New York. Besides English and Spanish, though, we probably have more Hmong, Somali, Ethiopian, and Oromo speakers than just about anywhere outside their native countries.

For those interested, (I know that's probably just about nobody, but I'm posting this anyway), there was a really good article I read awhile back on minority populations in the Twin Cities and throughout the State, (although they left out my Nepali Friends, who run one of only 3 or 4 real Nepali restaurants in the country, (and boy is it yummy)).

Intro to the article:

Personal Testimonies:

Demographic Breakdowns:

Ok, I'll stop hijacking the thread now.

C too.

Now travelling(see avatar) trying to get a few countries off the list and possibly teaching in one of them or not and just going back to teach in Japan. Also experiencing speaking a foreign language. You can get alot of mileage out of Spanish. 6 countries and counting.

Hola from Costa Rica.

I have a Mickey-Mouse writing job doing external communications for a cable TV network. I am trying to figure out which TEFL or CELTA program to go through, then I want to teach in Mexico or South America... or maybe Japan. I plan on making that leap next May.

There's an interesting Japan/South America connection. The above poster plus Denise and me. Maybe a good balance of world areas.

Yep, I am particularly interested in the parts of Japan where there is a high concentration of Peruvian and Brazilian immigrants. Apparently they are from families that emigrated to South America from Japan then came back to Japan when the South American economies tanked. Even though they are ethnically Japanese, they are treated like third-class citizens.

I used to teach EFL...before i ended up in the Middle East....there i just took registers..and handed them in at the end of every day....
Now I run a stall selling dodgy Victorias Secret bras at Romford market.
It's a lot more rewarding and i get to meet a better class of people!

Except I haven't made it down south yet. Crying or Very sad Someday... hopefully before I lose whatever Spanish abilities I am still desperately hanging on to.

I have a corporate job, working in the credit card marketing department of one of the largest banks in the U.S. Taught before, and may return to it after I retire just for fun.

I'm an Inventory Manager at a production and design plant.

I just sent my application in to the Boston Language Institute so that I can get a TEFL certificate this summer.

I hope to find a job teaching in the Middle East (Jordan, Syria, Lebanon or Egypt.)

It's a pretty major change of direction in my life.

Now that I left the TESL, I realize that ESL teachers are "weird" and I miss that. I try to keep quiet at work, but sometimes I just have to speak out, but I think I'm midunderstood. I don't really mind, though. After next week, I'll have a new schedule and a whole new set of co-workers.

I was an English teacher but changed a few years back.

I now develop and train a business software application and get paid a lot more and do a lot less.

10 years English teaching was enough for me.

Strangely i had only just finished my Masters when i moved on ...bit of a waste really

Here is an old thread and thought I might bring it back to life. Ok, I'm supposed to be writing a paper and procrastinating.

I don't qualify for this topic as I am teaching so how about those of you who aren't teachers? Why are you here and what do you think?
