Hey all,

Sorry to be posting all over the place these days but I came across some fast internet so I'm taking full advantage!

My partner (sans fast internet) is applying to a post that she has ALL the qualifications for except a background in US or IB schools.

She's Canadian with 2 years experience (possibly 1.5 depending on how you ask her Smile) in Canada, Thailand, and now Bhutan.

My question is if she should apply? School is in Singapore teaching 3rd graders English. Actually, I told her to apply because what's the worst that could happen.

But what might she emphasize? Should she emphasize she's part of a teaching couple thus reducing risk of bailing for her future employer? Should she mention that I'm American, thereby able to provide her insight into American curriculum/schooling?

What say you forum deities? Any help would be much appreciated. Cool [/i]

Help us to be sure (REALLY sure) she has the necessary quals.

That is, what type of degree does she have?

As for mentioning your nationality, in hopes that a partner (opposite sex spouse?) can provide other cultural info, I'd say skip it as any major point in that regard, but she might want to at least consider saying she is married. Her employer will probably not be able to give you work/visa, but knowing a second person is potentially coming might be useful background info. In some countries, they want to know, as housing is often for only 1 person. Check the Singapore forum for more advice.

Thanks for your input Smile

As for her quals:
- B.Ed. specializing in Early Years Development
- B.A. in English (double majored with criminology - not much use there)
- 2 yrs. experience with ESL students (Thailand, Bhutan)
- Completed Principles and Procedures of Second Language Teaching course (TESOL equivalent)

As for us:
- heterosexual couple
- not married
- I have work lined up that includes visa and other benefits

Updated thoughts? Cool

My thoughts exactly. I assume there is no fee for applying, so what are you out? Sometimes employers need to take the person with bare minimum qualifications because that person is available when the employer needs them. Experience is generally the thing you can be flexible on because you don't get a certificate stating your experience.

I'd say post in the Singapore forum.

As for the 2 of you, don't use words like "couple" or "partner" in any correspondence to employers. The words may not carry the intended meaning. She's your girlfriend to them.
