|
|
Hi guys,
I am hoping to move to the UAE in January 2012. I have 11 years EFL experience I have a CELTA, BA and MA (English literature not EFL).
I would be grateful for any information or advice on where to apply and my chances of finding employment. I am a single female and I would like you to take this into consideration in your recommendations.
thanks |

Your quals won't get you any of the preferred jobs (paid in full and on time with benefits and documentation. You might be considered on an adjunct basis but that means you'd need to be sponsored by a spouse probably and no benefits). Probably no legal less desirable ones (that provide documentation).
Being single or a female or both is irrelevant usually in UAE unless you aspire to work for the military - which your quals won't get you in anyways. |

I would say that it depends on your experience... what and who did you teach for that 11 years? Your main problem for the top employers is that an English Lit MA would be considered an unrelated major. Some employers may overlook that detail because of the CELTA. You won't really know until you apply.
What level did you want to teach? University Foundations?

Thanks guys. I have extensive EAP and ESP experience so I would like to teach on the university foundation programmes. Any suggestions on the best universities to apply for and where in the UAE? |

You might want to expand your question to include those institutions best to avoid.

Actually, I think there's a job posted on the UAEU website for an English Lit professor. Maybe you could check that out. |

They prefer a PhD, of course. And I believe that her experience is mostly in teaching ESL/EFL, not lit. Kind of a catch 22...
But might be worth applying. This job was listed April 1 and I wonder how up to date the listings are...

I don't know about any of that, of course. The positions are listed as open until filled. It may not be updated, or it may not be filled.
I think one should always apply. You never know who else is, or isn't, applying. If they don't have a phd candidate, will they really hire no one? I would doubt that.
If they reply that the position is filled, or her qualifications not sufficient, then she has a better idea of what to do next. |

Actually, I applied to that job 3+ years ago and was promptly turned down. Was it ever filled?? I can easily be dispensed with (!!) but my point is that I have seen this job ad for years. |
