Dear Sean and to whom it may concern at the Linshui Experimental School Linshui Middle School

The reasons for me not coming back is not the school's fault but the fault of Sunny's English Club.

I will explain as follows:

1. We have had to pay our own flight tickets, although the standard Chinese contract for Foreign teachers stipulates that we should be paid a return ticket (round trip) for every year worked, +- 7000rmb per teacher per contract.
2. We should be paid a travel allowance for every term worked, 1 200rmb per teacher per term .
3. Although not compulsory but there should have been an allowance for medical expenses, 1000rmb per teacher per term.
4. Evert, was also done out of a lot of money - a whole salary for the month of June 2011, 4000rmb.
5. He had to finance all the repairs of his house in Huaying, ie. water, gas, air conditioning etc. and his own internet connection. He even had to use his own computer, printer, paper and inks. He also had to buy all his own teaching materials for his teaching. This amounts to more than 2000rmb
6. Evert too did not receive his travel allowances nor medical, 1000rmb.
7.During summer and winter holidays we were not paid any salaries, and no extra classes were arranged by them during those holidays as promised by Sunnys English Clubs in Chengdu.
If we complained about any of this they would shout and become very rude towards us. That is why we became rude towards them.
8.We were never placed together at a school or in the same city as promised by Sunny, which caused a lot of extra expense and travelling.

If you look carefully at this you will see that in total this amounts to quite a lot of money and neither of us can afford to lose more money. They have developed an attitude that we owe the our time and knowledge.

The leaders of the schools usually pay over these monies to the agents as stipulated by the Chinese government and Education Bureau. So, you may understand us by wondering what happened to this monies.

We have been offered very good contracts by several other governments in other countries offering us double the salary and all expenses paid. We are now seriously considering these offers. Financially the last 18 months for and last year for Evert, ruined us.

We both lodged complaints with the South African Embassy and to the appropriate recruiting agents for foreign teachers.

I trust that you would be able to convey this email to the leaders of the school and I regret that I will not be returning to Sichuan.

I wish you all the best of luck for the new school year.
These complaints are not levelled at our individual schools, but at Sunnys English Clubs in Chengdu. Many other foreign teachers have experienced simillar problems at the hands of Sunnys.
Our schools,STUDENTS and co-teachers were good to us,AND WE WILL MISS THEM.

Yours,

Shirley Ann Davies

This is confusing and the Chinese doesn't match the English. Could you please post something more coherent.

It seems that you are not a native writer of English, so could you explain more clearly what happened.

I am utterly confused.

Posting an email and a response gives the outsider very little knowledge of what actually happened. Attacking a person because they cannot patch together what happened is also unnecessary. I have the feeling you are frustrated and angry, the email was written in haste as well as the messages here. Take some time to calm down an try to explain what happened.

Really not trying to pick a fight with you.

I think this is just a "warning" post.

The gist of it is the main email in proper English:

Quote:

The reasons for me not coming back is not the school's fault but the fault of Sunny's English Club.

I will explain as follows:

The only odd bit here is the last few lines before "Yours", which look like they were added in due to location in letter, strange variations in spacing after punctuation and excess capitalisation. The rest of the message mentions the organisation in question, so not sure why it was added if so.

Everything else included seems unimportant (though I am not able to read the Chinese text, but it seems to be what you get if you stick the English part into Google translate). The basic message is that the recruitment agency is to blame for the trouble that has occurred, not the school that the person worked at.

What is true and what isn't, like pretty much any accusation made on anonymous forums, is impossible to say. But I suppose it serves as a red flag to someone considering working for this organisation, so hopefully they will ask the right questions when the time comes.

I'm confused. Part of the initial post and replies seem like they were made not only by someone who is not a native speaker, but by a Chinese person. The mistakes in punctuation and spacing are very telling.

Maybe a Chinese employee has some issues with this organization and has taken it upon him/herself to share it with us? If so, that is pretty awesome.

The body of the e-mail does seem legit, and I (very unfortunately) wonder if the poor treatment was due to the teachers being from South Africa.

what exactly is the complaint?

you talk about the pay in a 'standard' contract. what standard
contract would that be? what was in your contract?

'should' be paid a travel allowance? is that in your contract or in
some 'standard' contract?

there 'should' have been an allowance for medical? but you also
say it's not compulsory. how 'bout your contract?

and those paid holidays....'promised.' is that also in your contract?

you complained to the south african embassy??????
