Fact is that if you mention Saud to anybody in KSA they'll immediately think of the family that doles out piles of cash so's they don't have to get a job. |
oh dear, babur, you are making the same mistake that many people unfamiliar with the kingdom assume: that all saudis are rich. WRONG. it's true that many are rich, and some are super-wealthy, but by no means all. once at a doleout of zakat charity in madinah the police had to use water cannons to keep back the crowds - not pushing from greed but poverty! and another thing...when king abdullah came back from usa recently, he was lauded for recommending a new social security measure: unemployed saudis would be given a stipend. how much was it? 1,500 sr a month. |

Dear zooey,
Great link - we tend to forget (or even not know) that not every Saudi is hip-deep in oil money.

THAT's, of course, because these figures are based on population, not nationality. If one considers the fact that they fly in plane-loads of under-paid, over-worked menials, their rankings aren't that surprising!
It's a crying shame! |

But does anybody have even a ballpark figure for "population" of Saudi Arabia if that means Saudis plus everyone else? Usually, when you talk about the "population" of a country, you're not including "guest workers," I think.
Ah, the good, old CIA:
Introduction ::SAUDI ARABIA
Geography ::SAUDI ARABIA
People ::SAUDI ARABIA
Population:
26,131,703 (July 2011 est.)
country comparison to the world: 46
note: includes 5,576,076 non-nationals
So, I guess "population" IS everybody.
Regards,
John |

I see your point, John. Have you been parting your hair differently?
On a more serious note, I tried to determine that before posting. Many dictionaries support my contention, but I like this one best:
Legal Dictionary
Main Entry: per capita
Pronunciation: p&r-'ka-p&-t&
Function: adv or adj
Etymology: Medieval Latin, by heads
1 : equally to each individual per capita > used of a method of distributing an esp. intestate estate compare PER STIRPES
NOTE: Per capita distribution of an estate provides each descendant with an equal share of the estate's assets regardless of the degree of his or her kinship. Children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, etc., all receive equal shares.
2 : per unit of population : by or for each individual per capita tax burden> Merriam-Webster's Dictionary of Law, 1996 Merriam-Webster, Inc.
Each and every "guest worker" that I watched had heads.
It's gone to my head, now! |

Once can see the inaccuracy of this when you look at where the UAE and Kuwait are on this list. In reality when you use only their nationals, they should both be in the top 5. (as would Qatar, which isn't on the list at all) Saudi would be quite a ways down the list.

Those figures are super old, from many years ago - maybe 10 years ago. Saudi Arabia is now around $21,000 per annum (2011). Your figures are from the early 90s. Countries like Turkey have also progressed enormously, and the figures for Turkey, today, are nothing like the ones shown on those stats.
