I'll try to have a flick through the CGEL a bit later (I'm in the process of boxing up some books).

Somewhat off-topic still, but in relation to the brief discussion (on page 1) that the student's words provoked (to paraphrase, "adjectives should precede nouns, but don't precede verbs"), what's the story with stuff like 'Can you slow(-) dance?'. I guess it gets called a compound verb or something, and that that provides the necessary wriggle room.

Make sure not to leave the box open. Also, don't leave the door open, we don't live in a barn. Why are barn doors always assumed to be open?
