OK, there's a park in Istanbul which claims to have free WiFi, but the only networks available are three encrypted networks and TTNet, which you have to log into.
Earlier I was told that there was free WiFi at the international arrivals terminal, but again, only TTNet and encrypted networks.
Then, at Starbucks there was a "Free WiFi, provided by TTNet" sign. Again, it requires a login.
So I'm assuming that all of these "free" access points are run by TTNet. Which confuses the hell out of me. How do I get to this "free" WiFi, if I'm not a TTNet subscriber?

| haha yeah.. Nothing is free here, especially not internet. It says Free wifi but requires your credit card to buy a plan. In starbucks you should ask the barista..they told me that they'd give me a number to text which would give me a password to log into their internet. |

The free TTNET is free at Starbucks and many other locations through out Turkey. To access the free WIFI, you need to have a Turkish cell phone number. You DO NOT need to register a credit card with TTNET to use the free WIFI so long as you have the Turkish cell phone number.
You can get a 10 Lira used cell phone in Turkey very easily and spend another 10 Lira on pre-paid phone credits to get a Turkish cell phone number. |

10 Lira phone?!?! I traveled across Turkey back in March and went to SO many different used cellphone shops and the cheapest I could find was 50 Lira for a used cellphone..(both in Istanbul and then in trabzon) The phones didn't last more than a month.
I just got a Turkcell Prepaid card and that cost 26TL.
Where are you getting your great deals?!? |

We purchased the cell phone at a shop in old city Bursa. It is an old Samsung phone but works great--for now:) |

| I haven't seen 2nd hand phones for 10tl but for 20tl, which isn't bad (it still works after a year) |

Can I get a cell phone number on my Galaxy Tab? And do you have to have a TTNET plan to use the free WiFi?

I don't know about the Galaxy Tab....but if it has a sim card slot like an iPad 3g, you should be able to go to a Vodafone or Turkcell store and get a pre-paid data sim.
You can use the free TTNET wifi (at a place like Starbucks) on your Galaxy Tab as long as you have a Turkish cell phone number. The reason you need a Turkish cell phone & number is TTNET will send a text message with a user ID and password for the free wifi location. I tried doing it with my US cell phone and it didn't work.
So when you go to a Starbucks that offers free TTNET wifi, you need to enter your Turkish cell phone number to the website, and you will receive a text message seconds later with a user ID and password. |

OK, I got a Turkcell card for 45 lira. I have no idea what the deal is and how much time I have, since I didn't get any information, even in Turkish. But it's definitely not a data plan, alas. I said several times "veri plani" and "3G" but either he didn't understand me or didn't have one. But I needed a phone, because they're no pay phones and Skype-phone is almost impossible here.
Any more advice, like how and where to get a data plan, would still be much appreciated. At the least it would be very useful to have access to Google Maps.
