Actually,Shostakovitch is one of my favourite composers and I have been researching his life and music for years.....but as most people know much of his music is not like that very entertaining and enjoyable light piece, and for very good reasons-try contrasting it with the third movement of his fifth symphony or the Passacaglia from his first violin concerto for example?

Soloman Volkov's books are a lively account of that period. Especially his book 'The Magical Chorus'. Critics tend to pooh pooh his writings as less than scrupulous, and that may well be the case. But as a jolly good read they serve as a great introduction to the issues of politics and culture in Russia.

Pretty much all of my students have mentioned the same complaints about the Russian economy at some point or another. Corruption is driving away business and discouraging competition, making it unlikely that new entrepreneurs will set up businesses in Russia. One of them explicitly warned me not to set up a business in Russia because it might eventually get stolen by a bureaucrat. The point about the Russian economy being too dependent on prices for raw materials ha also been made countless times as well. This article is entirely accurate in its account of the Russian economy. |
