No, I wouldn't risk it. Plus, I'm not a thief.

No way. I know someone who's gotten in trouble in Japan because of that.

Hi guys! i'm new to the site, but I'm going to be living in Japan teaching English pretty soon. I like to watch movies, and was wondering if Netflix works in Japan. I like to use Hulu, but I imagine that it wouldn't work since I'd have a Japanese IP address, right?

Also, after looking through the site for a while, I saw a few topic posting where people said that they "torrented" movies and tv shows. I'm American and I was thinking that this would be the best way for me to catch up on all of my favorite tv shows from home. But I'd always had the impression that Japanese ISPs were more strict than American ISPs, and they'd more apt to take action against copyright infringers. Is that the case? I don't want to get deported for downloading!

thanks!

No Netflix in Japan yet, but there are similar services for renting DVDs through the mail (no online viewing though, AFAIK). T

Edit: Hulu is now available in Japan for 1,480 yen per month.

If I were you, I'd set up a Slingbox at your parents' place before you leave. It might not help you see recent movies, but at least your TV shows/sports/news programs would be covered.

Some ISPs throttle/ send you a please desist letter if you upload too much and also illegally d/loading Japanese content can get you into trouble. Foreign content that is d/loaded, they couldn't care less about as far as I can see, I doubt it's even illegal.

thanks for the tips guys,

mc (or anyone else who knows) with a slingbox, are you able to save the media for later viewing or is it only a realtime viewing device? And does the Hulu Japan service have western shows as well?

David W, I figured as much about Japanese content, but i'm surprised to hear that they're so lenient on American content since most of the big entertainment companies have a Japanese branch as well. i don't even know where'd i go to find Japanese content! lol I guess i'm lucky.

Is Hulu here worth it? I hate waiting the extra year or so it takes to get the movies/TV shows here on DVD.

As long as you have some kind of recording device on the host television (the one that the Slingbox is hooked up to), you can record shows just as you would at home. Slingbox essentially gives you remote access to your TV, cable box, and hard disk recorder. Whatever you can do with those devices in your own home, you can do from a remote location with Slingbox

Yes, they do. I don't subscribe to Hulu, but their JPN homepage features ONLY Western shows as far as I can tell. Then again, if you have Slingbox and a recorder, there would be no need for a subscription service like this.

Thanks again, MC.

I'd heard of slingbox when it first came out, but just dismissed it as another fad that would leave me with expensive hardware that would be useless in the future. I'll definitely give it a second look now!
