-Hey everyone. Sorry if it's a redundant q and I know what the EDB website says but how much does a category 1 SNET make in total? I've heard conflicting answers I have a B.A. in English, CELTA, am enrolled in the DELTA and I'm debating which B.Ed./PGCE/PGDE to pursue. Thanks for any and all input. |

It depends on how many years of relevant teaching experience you have got, and only the years after you've gained your degree qualification will count. A category 1 NET will make the same amount as a category 5 NET, it depends on the experience you have accumulated. Being a category 1 or 5 NET will have no effect on your salary.
Before you get your PGDE or equivalent qualification however, you will have your salary capped at Pay point 20. Unfortunately, your CELTA and DELTA will not have any effect on your salary, maybe on your employment prospects, but not on your pay. Hope this information helps. |

Just want to add ... Point 20 is around $3600 USD , together with a special allowance of $2100 USD if you qualify for it. |

Just had a look at the Education bureau site n bit confused ...maybe some folks here can give me the benefit of their experience.
Seems like they prefer applicants to have English degrees or Modern Foreign language degrees. What if you have a BA where the foreign language is PART of the degree..any good?
I have a BA which included a language (including a year of in country language study) a Grad Dip Ed secondary (not English methodology, but one of the two methodologies was a language) and a Trinity TESOL Cert (not the preferred Diploma) so not really sure if i fit into any of those categories.
In practice, is the subject of your degree and that of your PGCE/PGDE (or whatever) of real importance? Assuming you have ESL experience I mean.

Can anyone tell me what is counted as relevant teaching experience? Is it only years in a high school that are counted or language school work too?
Thanks |

The EDB says a DELTA's required to become an SNET. Actually, a TESOL qual at the dip. level. |

The EDB provisionally hired me for a PNET job; I have a B.A. in ENG and a CELTA. They wouldn't interview me for an SNET job and they reason they gave was that I don't have a dip. This is consistent with what their website says, which is that one needs a cert. for primary and a dip. for secondary. BTW. given my exp. and what I've heard from others I wouldn't count on the EDB to land me a job. |
