Because I dont know upon cold arrival which side to get the hotel for a few weeks on. I dont want to get a 2 or 3 week hotel as a job-search base for example in Kadikoy only to discover that there aren't many jobs in that area and have to travel all the way to for example Bayrampasa every day to hand out resumes. Or vice versa.
OR are job opportunites (I'll be looking basically at the lower-end schools since I only have a BA in English and 3 years experience in Korea and no TEFL cert) basically equally distributed throughout the giant city?
I have no personal preference for either side--if only that I'd rather get the first 2-3 weeks in a hotel on the side with the most possibilities. I guess dershanes are all I can find esp. arriving right before Christmas/New Years. Can anyone shine a little light on this? Thanks. |

Hey gloomyGumi~
I've been job hunting like a crazy lady for the past week and there seems to be equal amounts of jobs/schools on both sides. I sent my CV n' stuff to all the language schools I could find online. I didn't go to the school unless they offered a job interview. I already know where I wanna work and live so I was very specific about the school's location.
I don't think you're going to be able to avoid lots of travel around the city no matter where you choose to get your hotel if you don't care which side you wanna work on.
FYI: I know a girl who is working at Dialogue in Fatih with no TEFL. |

Yeah, jobs are spread out, but I'd say that the greater Kadikoy area has the highest concentration of dersanes. Especially as you'll be moving there with your wife, I'd really recommend you concentrate your efforts around there anyways. |

gloomyGumi,
I believe that to get a work visa you need a TESOL certificate, MA TESOL, or possibly several years' experience (not sure about this one). From previous posts of yours I understand you have some experience, but have you looked into the visa reqs?
Regards,

Actually, you don't need anything specific to get a work visa, other than a school willing to actually get you one (very hard to find). |

It's not a residence visa, it's a permit, but yes, that's what most teachers do. Once you have that, it doesn't matter what kind of visa you entered on, you're fine until it expires or is renewed. Although you are NOT legally allowed to work on it, it's very commonly done. Problems are very rare and usually accompany other breaches of the law. But, technically, you could be deported if caught. |
