I'm convinced Indonesia is fine is long as you don't get involved with the wrong people and are respectful. Of course, I haven't been there yet!

More danger in political upheaval and mob violence than anything else.

Helluva volcano eruption going on right now though. You'll notice my avatar is Rinjani, right across the way!

More of an alarmist response from kopikopi, than alarmist questions I would say.

Westerners that get in to violent trouble with locals here are generally of a certain breed. That is, loud, brash and in no way attune to the local culture.

If you maintain a degree of respect and go about your way in a quiet manner, you're chances of getting into trouble of a violent nature is extremely small.

I personally had no problems in Indonesian, but that was certainly not the case for many foreigners I knew there. As for your "no way attune to the local culture" comment, that is utter BS. My friend who was murdered might have been knew the Indonesian culture like the back of his hand. Maybe you mean "adhere to the local culture"?

And maybe you should read Rayman's post s-l-o-w-l-y, and it will become apparent what type of people he is referring to when he says "no way attune to local culture".

Is it dangerous to be known among your neighbors as a (non-proselytizing) church attending Christian?

Well, there are areas of Indonesia that are predominantly Christian. You might want to look into getting jobs in those places.
