| Getting a Univ contract with the the summer and winter holiday months paid in full is still far from the norm in the PRC, especially for a new foreign teacher. Some Universities might agree to it after he or she has become tried and true and is also agreeing to a multi-year extension. |

To be honest, I don't know what is the 'norm'. But what I would say is that anyone who signs for a full year and doesn't get paid for the winter holiday is signing a poor contract. Anyone who stays on and does not get summer pay is also getting stiffed. I obviously wouldn't expect summer pay if you are leaving, but if they want you for year two, then they should be paying you for the summer. Is that the norm? No idea, but it is what I would consider a decent contract.
I would be open to forfeit it only if I felt that it balanced out somewhere else in the contract with a different, unexpected perk. |

Winter AND summer holiday with FULL salary may not be the norm (def. not if you're leaving) but full pay for at least the winter holiday is (have yet to see a university contract that didn't include that), and full salary for the winter holiday AND either half salary or full salary for the summer holiday (if staying on) is becoming more common. If someone is approaching the end of their first contract and is offered a second and there's no formal mention of summer pay to bridge the mid-Jul to 1 Sept period, they would be wise to bring it up.
When I first started at my current workplace there was no summer pay at all but two years ago the school started paying it (surprisingly enough they made the initial offer without being solicited on it). And anyone who signs a contract here, regardless of age and experience, will be made the same offer of summer salary if they stay a second, third, fourth year. |
