Looks like I may soon be a desert rat at a uni that many on this forum have complained of a lot.
But, on a really basic level of figuring out what to give my valuable luggage space to, I'm wondering about whether to bring short-sleeved shirts. All the pics I've found online have Omanis wearing long sleeves in what (I'm sure) is very hot weather. I understand that Middle Easterners may be seriously deficient in Vitamin D production for cultural/religious/modesty reasons. Need I also avoid the most natural form of Vitamin D production by having to wear long sleeves all the time in hot weather.
A related question is whether I should minimize the number of long sleeve shirts I bring also because they are a thicker grade of cotton than is functional in the heat of Oman.
In other words, should I just assume that I will need to mostly get all new shirts once I'm in Oman?
Thanks in advance. |

| Short sleeved shirts are perfectly fine. I mostly buy long and just roll up the sleeves. |

Well, I guess the obvious question to ask next then is, "Do you buy long and just roll up the sleeves" so that you can adjust the sleeves and your skin exposure to deal with cultural needs/expectations as the situation changes? |

One of the reasons could be the fact that they tend to keep the AC set at the proper temperature for refrigerating food. For males, the modesty issue is not as crucial as for the women.

True, and for most of the school year, the weather is actually pretty good ! Warm by some standards I guess but after many years here, there are some days and especially nights in the 'winter' here that feel downright chilly !

Short sleeves are fine in Oman...bring as many as you need.
I'm sitting in a shisha cafe right now and there are three Omani men wearing t-shirts and shorts.....Not really sure where you are headed, but I am in the coastal town of Sohar and short sleeves and shorts seem to be all the rage in this heat and humidity.
Of course, wearing more professional attire at work would be expected. |

Ibri. No Coast there. No humidity either, I expect.

Interior towns are more conservative. Take your short sleeved shirts and then just do as everyone else does.

Thanks. I figured the interior would be more conservative. |

| Colleges in Oman insist that long sleeve shirts are worn. Students must do so ;faculty must do so |
