Hi all,
My name is Daniel and I am a CELTA qualified English Teacher currently living and working in Berlin. My wife and I (who is an Italian Citizen) want to move on to pastures new and were thinking about the possibility of trying China, Thailand, Vietnam or Hong Kong.
I keep running into questions regarding the Visa. My wife is not a qualified English teacher and therefore would be entering a country as part of a dependent visa. In most countries I am looking at, that means she is unable to work. In some cases, it seems she is even unable to look for work. Is this the on-the-ground case or are some countries more leniant.
My wife was hoping that once I have found a job and we have moved, she could start to look for work and apply for a job as part of the dependent visa. I am getting mixed responses from people regarding this and not sure where I should turn now. Some people say she could change her Visa to a work-permit in country and other people say she would would need to leave and apply from out of country.
I am getting a bit lost and don't know where to turn...
Any help would be greatly appreciated...
thanks,
daniel |

Find out whether you need a work visa before you get hired or afterward. It may depend on the country. Her dependent visa probably cannot be issued until you have the work visa.
I know you have not mentioned Japan, but as an example, you need the job first, then the work visa, and then she can apply for the dependent visa. Once she has the DV, she can look for part-time work, and after she has secured that, she can apply for special permission from immigration that allows her to work. I suggest you learn the flow of events needed for the 4 countries you are pursuing. |

If you are legally married (and have a legalized wedding certificate to prove it) then she can get a dependents visa in all of the countries you have listed PROVIDED you have a work visa and/or work/residence permits.
She won't be able to work (legally) on a dependents visa.
She will be able to find work as an English teacher (illegal) if she wants it (provided she is Caucasian).
She can legally work if she finds a job that can sponsor a work visa/permit (eg: has a degree and finds a job as an Italian teacher).

Hi,
Come to Singapore.
Can dependent pass holders work in Singapore?
You are allowed to work in Singapore as a DP holder (except if the EP holder is an S pass holder) as long as your potential employer is willing to apply for a Letter of Consent (LOC) that requires approval from authorities. The employer should complete the Letter of Consent Application Form and submit to authorities. It takes about 2-3 weeks to receive an outcome from authorities. The Letter of Consent expires at the same time as your Dependant Pass; therefore you should renew the LOC whenever your DP is renewed.

Your wife will be able to work on a dependant visa in Hong Kong. It's just a case of finding a job. It took my friends husband (Indonesian) a few months to find work. |
