I've been in Riyadh for the past few years and am looking to get out. I've been to Taif many times and like the city.

What's the scoop on the Taif University and its language center?

I personally would not suggest Taif University. They are desperate for native speakers and will promise you just about anything to get you to come there. A friend of mine was promised a non-teaching position in e-learning that actually didn't exist just to deceive them into signing a contract. Once the contract is signed, then if you break it, you receive a 5-year employment ban. The university knows this so they basically have you enslaved for a year. They also not only confiscate your passport but your original degrees and certificates as well. They figure that even if you could manage to somehow get a new passport, your original academic documents may be harder to replace. The female campus I am told looks like a refugee camp with no Internet access for teachers and classroom sizes of over 60 students!
No one has received all the benefits they were promised. I could go on, but I hope you get the picture.

Dear EFLUndercover,

Is anyone still wondering just why they're blocking this forum in Saudi? Apparently truth hurts - them, at least.

Regards,
John

John,

I happen to be in Saudi now and had to go through a 'back door' so to speak to get on the forum. Blocking the forum is actually useless. Anyway, once teachers 'inside' go on vacation, they can just post away on what's going on to warn others to stay away or at the very least take caution. It's a shame actually.
If the Saudis would just be honest and upright, as they should be, then teachers would flock to them. But in some twisted way they have opted for the 'carrot and the stick'!
