Maybe I can end this thread by saying
that the best women are in Japan.
No doubt about it. |

i commented on it being very honest because the writer had the courage to address something more controversial than, say, how to correct bi-labial mispronouciations with or good places to eat in X'ian.
secondly, i think i already mentioned why i said NA women dont fall on the "good" side of the continuum (love of money and themselves). youre right in saying that my litmus test is very limited (as is everyone's); however, i think i prefaced that by saying that opinions are, by definition, "subjective". i was only communicating what i know and see here in the states. im sure many other men would offer evidence that contradicts my claims. but these, too, would be subjective and therefore could be refuted as easily as my own. and we could go round and round and round - that was kinda the point of my posting. |

Ah…..I peruse this line a lot, but I rarely respond to these postings. No time. Anyway, they often seem so petty, so personal…..(I'm writing this off-line, so I got a little time….)They often go something like this:
A: "Well, I think that blah, blah blah, and furthermore, etc., etc., etc……"
B: "Well as far as A's posting is concerned, he says that blah blah blah AND etc., etc, etc,, but what I really think he means, if I understand him correctly, is X AND Y AND Z."
C: "No, B, what A means when he says that is…….yadada, yadada…."
A: "Well, I didn't actually say that at all. What I really, in fact, actually said was………."
B: "Yes, you did, A. YOU SAID!!!!::……"
A: "No, I didn't say that at all..What I said was…."
C: "YES, you did, A: On……….., you said, and I'm quoting here…………"
A: "I DIDN'T SAY THAT!!!!!"
B: "Yes, you did!"
C: "Yeah, you sure did, A!"
A: "No, I didn't."
B: "Yes, you did!"
A: "DIDN'T!"
B: "DID!"
A, B, AND C: "NEEHYAH, NEEYHAH!"
The posting often continues in this vein until I lose the point of the original subject!
I think the subject of the original posting was great. Honest. Straightforward. I have some experience with Women-in-ESL: I didn't go into teaching BECAUSE of the girls I thought I could find. I went into it because I thought I had some of the natural talent for it, because I thought I was good at it, because I realized that with formal training I could support myself by doing it, and because I like to travel, and I am interested in foreign cultures.
As soon as I started doing it full-time, I realized that I loved working with women. As a single guy who likes women, and for someone who has been told he's not bad looking, and can be charming, it was great. I found too that women are better students. More serious. Harder workers. More patient. Tougher. Better.
I went out with a (very recently) former student, a girl who was living in America, who had come there as a refugee from Vietnam. It lasted for 2 years, from 91-93,until I broke it off because I couldn't see myself being a father to her son. He was 12, but his papers said he was 9. The records are very easy to fake. I just couldn't accept this responsibility. I've seen her since then, and neither of us has any regrets. It was a wonderfully supportive, warm, and mutually beneficial relationship.
I also went out with, and finally married, another former student, a Colombian woman, in 1995. She convinced me to come to Saudi Arabia, where I have been ever since. It didn't work out. She was professional, hated not to be able to drive, the denigration, the insolence, the disparaging culture, the attitude of arrogance, intolerance, suspicion, and hostility that permeates the culture here. Hey, if you can't take this, you need to "get the heck outta town!" They are part and parcel of life in Saudi Arabia.
On one of my many trips through Bangkok, where I……..well, did all of the things single lonely guys who come from the Middle East and who are straight, do…… on my way to Vietnam, I met the girl of my dreams. She's Vietnamese. We've been married for 2 and a half years now, and it seems like 2 weeks. I never imagined anyone could be as happy as I am. The LAST thing we ever talk about are things like …..her wanting a “career”, her “fulfilling” herself, my need to be…… “supportive”, etc. etc. She’s never been to the States, doesn’t particularly want to go, and so is hardly “begging” for the Green Card.
So, I got REALLY a lot more to say, but as I was composing this in my head, I thought, sooooo what does this have to do with teaching?! So I'll stop here. If the original poster wants to write a…….PM, is it??, I may respond, but it would take me awhile. I just thought that the questions he asked, and the issues he raised, I have something to say about.
Cheers.
P.S. In previewing this, I've noticed a lot of … stuff. It seems to be from quotes and dot dot dot. I can't really figure out how to fix it. No time. |

Dear John Y.
Well, old buddy ( emphasis on the OLD ) and colleague, someone's been lying to you BIG time. I refer to this from your typically rambling, semi-coherent posting ( actually, it's not that bad - you should hear him in person ).
" someone who has been told he's not bad looking, and can be charming "
Nice use of the passive, there. And just who was it that told you you're " not bad-looking "? Ray Charles? And " can be charming "?? John, if charm were water, you'd be the Sahara. But you must have something, something not visible to your co-workers, because you managed to talk a very beautiful, very smart and very good woman into marrying you. What was it, John? 'Fess up. Hypnosis, drugs, Vulcan mind-control? Well, whatever - it worked. Now get back to work and stop surfing the Net on company time.
Regards,
John S |

Good women / or many available women period are in:
Philippines, Vietnam, Burma, Eastern Europe, Russia and Latin America.
Whether you succeed in the relationship or not depends on many factors. But at least you will get into a relationship. You cannot suceed/fail if you are not meeting women, period. In those areas, you will be able to meet /date them and then play the success/failure game.
In other areas it is hard to meet women because of racial, cultural, numerical or religious restrictions. Physical restrictions, as well- in some countries you need to be a good-looking blond GQ model in his twenties to score. In the areas above, this does not matter that much as long as you are a kind person and are stable. |

Oh, yes, that is why you do not go to China or Japan except for work. I was there and I did not score that much.
With 200+ countries in the world, why limit yourself to only a few. You should go to VN, Philippines, Colombia , etc.
The equation seems- the richer the country, or the more rich people it has, the more stuck up the women are. I do not blame them-they only have a bit more than a decade to find the right man.
Women are materialistic, period, but do you want to meet one that is happy with a teacher or the one who wants her man to have three Maseratis. Both are interested in your money. Some are happy with less. |

Dave, you got me thinking and I'm gonna step out on a limb here and say that Japanese, Chinese and, to a certain extent, Korean women are much, much more materialsitc than the women I knew back in Canada.
I have had the chance to watch and obeserve women in Japan and Taiwan as well as Korea and am amazed at how shallow, stupid and materialistic they can be.
They don't know anything about BMW or Mercedes. They have no clue. They don't admire the machine in the way you might think that they would. They don't really appreciate the fine craftmanship that goes into a BMW or Mercededs.
Instead, a Mercedes is a sign or message that tells others how well off they are. Nothing more. It's just something you do at a certain age or time in your life to send out the message to others around you that you are succesfful.
I've seen on TV in Japan where 22 year old Japanese girls forego lunch or dinner just so that they can ride the train holding a Louis Vuiton hand bag.
It's mental.
Take out a map of the world and ask one of these girls where Korea is and they'll point to Brazil; Australia and they'll point to Africa.
Most of them are as stupid as they come. |

A Japanese friend of mine (female) went to the Phillippines and came back with a beautiful emerald necklace. When I admired it, she told me that there were a lot of people selling fake gems in the city they were visiting. "But," she said, "I know this one is real because it was expensive."

WoW!
Lucy, you really summed it up there nicely!
Well, done. I've too heard it put that way by more than one Japanese person.
Did you know they now have a show on TV that examines young ladies Louis Vuiton hand bags to determine wether they are authentic or not?
GUY: I'm sorry. It's a fake!
GIRL: SHOCKU!!!

I read in a Japan Times article a few years ago that for many women in Japan, it doesn't matter if the designer good is real or not. Just as long as *other* people think they're actually carrying a Vuitton or Prada, that's good enough for them.
I loved it when my female university students would come to class in the wintertime, Burberry scarves carefully tied so the label was displayed right under their chin.
I told a few of them that were planning on visiting the US that they shouldn't do that there, that it would be considered tacky.
Their response? "Well, then how will people know it's a Burberry?"
Sigh. |

One thing is for sure, they are not in the Middle East. It's a bit of a trade off really.Latins are generally good fun,Eastern Europeans are exceptionally beautiful and Asians will do everything for you.A lot of teachers in the Middle East often go to Thailand on their hols for the obvious reasons. Personally,I find anyone who wants a girlfriend that looks about ten years old very disturbing. |

I remember that also. I gradually noticed that all the girls were purposely tying their scarfs in such a way so as to "advertise" the Burberry logo.
Pretty amazing, isn't it?
I guess there's a strong desire to be a part of the group in Japan or to not stick out.
Some of them are mental about it, though.
Lucy, I had a good laugh at some of the posts you put up on this thread as I can totally relate to what you're getting at. |
