Hi all,
I am currently doing a 120 hour online TEFL course. I'm 29, have a BAA and a Masters degree (not in English). Would I have trouble finding a decent teaching job in Thailand with the online course and my degrees or would I have to do a CELTA or certTESOL?
Thanks,
Mike |

You'd have trouble finding a decent job from abroad.
Land here in March and you are 100% assured of a decent job with the proviso that decent does not necessarily mean good pay (above 40k baht/mo).
If you want something better you will need to be here, prove yourself in the classroom and network. There are jobs in the 80k range.
Without home country certification as a teacher (QTS) the better international schools are out of your reach.

Hi tttompatz,
Why would I have trouble finding a decent job from abroad?
Is it better to first go, then look for a job rather than securing one beforehand? Is there any chance finding work before March or is that generally the only hiring month?
Thanks,
Mike |

The school year starts in mid May. The bulk of hiring for school jobs happens in March and April. There is a small bump at the semester break in October as well.
For the remainder of the year you would mostly be looking at:
i) schools where people left early (for any number of reasons),
ii) schools who couldn't get a teacher (for any number of reasons) or
iii) language academies.
The SLOWEST period for job hunting is Dec. - Feb.
Once large caveat is that Thai schools typically do not hire from abroad. Too many tire kickers who look at the pretty travel brochures but never manage to come up with the airfare or wherewithal to get here and/or too many bodies here who would teach cheap just to extend their stay in the kingdom.
If you want an OK job in the LOS you will usually need to be here.
It is NOT the same as Korea or China (as examples) where they do the bulk of their hiring from abroad.
There are 3 notable exceptions to the above:
i) you have a related MA with publications or an ABD/PhD.
ii) you are a licensed teacher at home.
iii) you know someone (connections go a LONG way here).
If you want something beyond the entry level 30k baht job then you will have to get yourself a 60-day-double-entry visa, a plane ticket and jump on a plane.
