Report them to SAFEA or the PSB. They may not care, and you may get the boot for your efforts (for working illegally, though not your fault) and may then technically need to return home to apply for a proper job.
I think this is why most teachers would rather just slink away and chalk it down to experience (and as you have done, warn others).
Did you do your research before you came over and joined them? Did you look up the school, talk to current teachers, visit local expat forums to see if they are mentioned?
If you didn't that doesn't mean they have the right to do what they did, nor should they get away with it. But if you didn't do the proper groundwork, take that as a lesson, look for something new ASAP and move onto greener pastures.
You are on the ground now, you should be able to find something decent (though you might prefer to change cities, having read this thread, http://forums.eslcafe.com/job/viewtopic.php?t=75435). Keep in mind if you look in the same city you don't want your old boss to get wind as he is friends with the boss of another school you are applying for. Might be better not to mention the place if you have only been around for a short while. |

blackmail? forced? in what way?
if they refuse to work, then they are fired.
that's pretty much how it works all over the world.
terminated and fined? by whom? illegal contracts are not enforceable.
who's gonna fine 'em?
"When I asked what should I teach...." so....you're working illegally? |
Do you really think that is how it works all over the world - if your employer were to ask you to do something illegal and you refused and then got fired for it - what do you think would happen? I know this is not the west, but that's why I'm posting in the first place - to warn other FT's.
My friend didn't get his previous months salary because of this situation. RMB 10,000. Because he didn't want to be the an FT *beep* to the school.
Where I come from in the states we usually have a curriculum that we follow. We usually at least have a book. Am I qualified to teach English as a second lanquage? Yes. Am I qualified to design a a curriculum? No. That would be the job of school administrators. Could I do it? Yes I've done it before for a special extra-curricular class. But that's not my job.
But again I was only writing this to demonstrate the kind of place this is. Parents pay all this money for their children to learn English with foreign teachers and what do they get? A disorganized school with no intentions of doing anything else but making money. I mean they knowingly hire unqualified teachers, teachers are coming and going like clockwork, and they don't even have a standard curriculum for this VIP English class for teachers to follow. Come on. That's a joke.
And to tickle your fancy I am qualified to have a Z-Visa, but didn't get one until I changed jobs recently. So yes I was working illegally for this school for quite a while. But now I have a nice job with a Z-Visa. Thanks for your reply. |

Uh....this is not uncommon. It is the norm for training centers and Uni's. It comes down to money. The only variable is the degree of organization. This opinion is based on my experience, perhaps others feel different.
Hate to burst the bubble you are living in but education is a business and most FT's are unqualified to teach. If anyone thinks a bachelors in art history makes a qualified English teacher they are delusional. |

Do you view it as simply morally wrong, as the supposed amount the school would be making is that much higher than the FTs hourly wage, even if the wage itself surpasses expectations?
|
Not at all.
The only thing I find objectionable is when a school says "Sorry, we can't afford you" and fire the qualified guy with 10 years experience and hire the unqualified guy fresh off the plane because he works for much less. |
