Hi everyone,
I am planning to go to Hong Kong very soon. I am looking for jobs online, but so far very few bites. I wanna ask everyone here who can give me some information for help. PLEASE!!! 
I am a non native speaker, but my level of English is native level. I worked in USA for 4 summers, so my accent is almost non existent. I have a CELTA degree which I got in New York. I am currently home in Europe, and I have a bachelor's in education. I am a white male (some say that's important  ) I am planning to go there and try to find a job on location. My question is: Is that a good idea? Will I be able to find a job with my qualifications? I am okay with taking a risk, but I don't wanna go on a suicide mission.

| I got a BA, CELTA, but experience is my flaw. I did 1 on 1 tutoring for about a year, but on my own. No reference about that. And I do have a BA, but it's from a European country. Not sure how much it is eligible. But I am not asking only about BC, I am asking about any job prospects in HK for a person of my qualifications, not necessarily BC. |

We won't give you a job.
Schools will.
Send out your CV and ask them.
They'll have a better idea about whether you are employable or not...
Sorry to be blunt, but that's how it is in HK. It's not a shopper's market.... |

| I suppose you're right. I was just asking what people with experience think... I am planning to go there and try on location, and wanted to know if I have a shot or not. Thanks for the honesty though, I am not mad about it at all. It's actually refreshing. |

My guess is that if you come here you will find work quite quickly with your quals and experience. You may not be a native English speaker but so long as you look like one and can speak English fluently that should be enough. Enough for what? Well, that's the catch. Obviously, once you arrive you'll be on a visitor's visa, so you'll be under pressure to find work asap - also because of course you'll be spending your savings from day one. Because of the urgency you may feel obliged to take a job that isn't exactly brilliant to start with - a private language school maybe, which could pay anywhere between 14K and 20K. But, you could improve on that with your next job. And you might get lucky and land fairly decent work.
Bear in mind also that any employer will have to go through the visa application process on your behalf, and that will take a month or two. So you will need money to tide you through. One thing is almost certain though - applying for this level of work from the other side of the planet is almost certainly not going to get you a job. But sending some CVs in advance and telling them you're on the way might help to line up some possibilities. |

| One quick question. When I do get there, and lets say I get a job, and it takes 4-6 weeks to get the paperwork, do I have to stay in HK during that time, or can i fly back home and come in time for the start of my job? |

No problem at all from an official point of view: you just have to make sure that your visa is sent to your "home" address so you can stick it in your passport and activate it on your return to HK.
Just note that many language centres want people to start work ASAP after a successful interview. You'll be aware by now that that is actually illegal; some people risk it, but if an employer is asking you to do so, it's a fairly safe bet that there will be other dodgy practices in the business too. |

Hello,
To sum everything up: my best bet is to get a tourist visa, go to Hong Kong with enough money to sustain myself for some time, search for jobs, if and when I do get a job, the school will help me with the work visa by giving me the necessary documents, I get the visa, go on a visa run, come back, and then that's it.
Did I get it right? |

Nearly right YOU give the SCHOOL the documents which they send to the Immigration Department in order to apply for your visa. Fortunately you do not have to send your originals away; the ID accepts copies and the school's say-so that they have seen the originals.
Otherwise, all correct. |
