Hi, I am a 23 y/o native English speaker with a BA in Creative Writing, a CELTA and about 4 months full time teaching experience in the UK. I am considering flying out to Madrid or Barcelona (undecided as of yet) and approaching as many language schools as possible with my CV and see where it gets me. So I have a couple of questions,

1. If I did this what are the chances of me finding full-time teaching work (in either city)? Would they be reasonably high or quite slim? (Taking into account the time of year, my experience, etc.)

2. Where would be my best bet to apply to (again taking into account my experience, qualifications, etc.), language schools, private schools (mainly children I guess), Uni's?

3. How long should I expect to wait before seeing job offers and how much money would you recommend I have saved to see me through until I get paid? Would 2000 be enough?

Any advice is appreciated, thanks

In Madrid I think you'll definitely find work. A friend who is a Director of Studies said he's desperately trying to find any qualified (CELTA, onsite TEFL) people to fill hours (about 25 a week). But he's said the candidates so far have been utter pish (turning up late for the interview, not being able to plan a class having no clue as to how to teach). Same happened at another academy I worked for.

Just blanket email every academy - at this time in the year you'll probably be doing in company business classes but it pays ok. Easily enough to enjoy yourself. 2000 should be ok if you fly out. That'd last you two months (if not a little longer, but seen as you'll probably have a job by then it's not too much of an issue).

Ditto -- could your give me your DOS friend's contact details? I'm serious about teaching English as I plan to be in Madrid for a long time. I've got 4 years of experience teaching English in Madrid (as a language assistant in primary schools and a high school, plus a few private classes in academies and so many of my own private classes that I can barely remember). I haven't got a CELTA, but I do have a degree in Spanish and French. I'm a New Zealander but recently became a pareja de hecho of my Spanish girlfriend and will have my residency card and be able to apply for a social security number within a month.
