i saw this coming and bought a whole bunch of last years rice already.
I am in Chiba, so it is hard to find rice that is not from the Kanto or Tohoku area. |
Me too- most people did I think. Now I'm interested to see whether rice from Niigata and Akita is contaminated. It's hardly a big surprise that rice from fields 50km from the plant is contaminated, what would be much more serious for the country as a whole is if rice from Niigata etc is near or over the limits.
Since the Fukushima rice seems to have only just gone over the Japanese safety standard (which is actually stricter than the EU's standard) I'm thinking rice from Niigata and Akita might be ok. Not really wanting to eat rice with any amount of radioactive cesium in it though, especially while breastfeeding a small baby, so will keep an eye out for Kyushu rice- I have seen it in supermarkets where I live at normal prices and it is also available online. |

I guess, though when i talked about it, all my co workers looked at me like I was worried about space aliens.
I know that most of the foods are safe, but I don't want to risk getting some batch of radiated food, that slipped through any inspections. As I am sure that they have not found all the radioactive fallout locations. Just impossible, unless they really were going to throw manpower at it.
Also, with summer being over, I am going to start using my heater soon. But with kerosine prices being so much higher, it is cheaper for me to run my AC unit's heater. Seeing how the grid is under strain, petrol is prolly going to go up a lot this year, making heating oils costly. It's that or overload the grid
As, i don't think they have any new power generation plan under way. |

Hmm, don't know, but they mentioned on the news a couple of months back that people were stocking up on 2010 rice, and not long after Amazon (where I often get heavy things like rice and flour) sold out of all their 2010 rice except the really expensive stuff.[/quote]

Got me. I stocked up on mostly on account of it being like 2200 for 10KG
But still, got some looks at my school when I mentioned that. My wife is from Sendai, so I try to buy Miyagi rice. Which I did, but I won't, def not this year. |

No, all I have seen is that on Amazon the cheaper varieties of last year's rice (usually about 2,900 yen for 10kg) sold out quite suddenly a few months back- I was one of those buying!
It's always been possible to buy rice that is 6,000 yen or more for 5kg for example for those that want to- just like some people buy those 5,000 yen melons when the usual price is 500 yen. There'll be something special about the expensive rice that makes some people want to buy it.
Rice in the supermarkets is pretty much all 2011 rice now and prices are the same as ever. |

Radiation found in Tokyo.
Stringent tests planned to map radiation spread after hotspot found in Setagaya
| Quote: |
Setagayas mayor said concerned parents monitoring for radiation asked them to conduct further tests on a roadside spot near a kindergarten in Tsurumaki. Researchers found radiation levels of 3.35 microsieverts per hour along the streetmuch higher than previously reported levels. Setagaya is 220 kilometers from Fukushima.
According to calculations based on the the science ministrys criteria, the equivalent annual dose in the hotspot would be 17.6 millisieverts, just below the 20 millisieverts per year threshold that requires evacuation.
The reading is also higher than levels measured recently at Iitate, an area in Fukushima Prefecture that has been evacuated. |

| So, after reading this article, my abated fear has returned. So then folks, what the hell do we do? Stay here and possibly get zapped.. Or grin and bear it because Japan's such a great place to live... Yeah I know I could go home, as that's what someone's going to tell me.. But I'm just curious how many people who are still here feel about all this.. Concerned or not? Staying on or NOT? |

| That radiation was unrelated to Fukushima. Turned out to be stored bottles of radium 226 believed to be used for cancer treatment. |

Radiation from bottles in a basement! That's an incredible story.
After reading the NY Times article, I feel that more citizens are going to be checking their areas for hotspots. I expect to see reports of more hotspots soon. |

I read it and I don't know what your point is. Unless you plan on standing on one of the hot spots (not necessarily caused by Fukushima in any case) for months on end, then no need to panic. |
