Hi there

I'm a newbie and would like a job in Madrid. Can anyone recommend a good school? (By good I mean fair and honest)

I'm a New Zealander with a British passport. I have a BA degree in Art History from a New Zealand university and a 100 hour TEFL certificate from TEFL England.

I'm living in London.

This is a very subjective question. You have to remember that everyone has had different experiences with language academies here in Madrid. I would say do some research here and on the web to find answers to your question.

Since you have a British passport, go straight to The British Council. They are always looking for teachers who meet their qualifications. Go to their website, apply and see what they say.

Suerte,

Shawn

The British Council require 2 years experience if my memory is correct. Also a DELTA for many positions. 2 years + CETLA is the usual for Europe I believe. I remember the tutors on my CELTA course being amazed and how much more competative the TEFL industry has become.

Like the other posters say, it's all subjective. There are lots of rubbish schools, and a few good ones, and different peoples experience can vary with the same school.

But just to answer the question, I can recommend Language Solutions: honest, supportive and pay on time. There are of course lots of other good schools about, but I know these guys well and they're good people.

Do not limit yourself to what they say on the website. I say still apply and let them decide. If academies are desperate enough, they will take people who show potential, but don't meet all of their qualifications. Never limit yourself in life.

As far as the TEFL market becoming competitive, I can speak for Madrid, and there are still plenty of backpackers here who get work easily. Maybe in the ads there are many academies requiring a TEFL or even a CELTA, but at the end of the day, when an emergency pops up, as long as a warm body is in the classroom, the academy has one less fire to put out

In my experience.. I have also had positive experience with Language Solutions Madrid (Professional and pay well), also try Lingua Viva (reliable and honest, not very high rate of pay but stable) and OPEN Languages (Lots of work, pay is generally pretty good).
